a few thoughts about the end of pesterquest

this whole post is a massive spoiler, so heads up!

i really loved a lot of things about dirk’s route (getting to hold the sord was especially good), but i think my favorite part was the secret end that comes after clicking on the reader- you- when you’re at john’s mailbox, considering whether or not to put the copy of sburb beta back in and undo all you’ve done because some anime dipshit said so and he has the power to plaster the story in orange times new roman. obeying ultimate dirk’s orders and putting it back causes homestuck to proceed as we know it, and mspar’s story just ends there. the game ends. if we throw it back into the sewer, the game just closes, leaving us simply adrift. but if we take the third option, we decide to take control of this timeline with the help of aradia and the green sun. once we find ourselves delving into the very center of the narrative, the text switches to first person, and to the distinct white-on-green style of a first guardian. the story ends with the mspa reader becoming the first guardian of their own little story, all while still wearing a hoodie that once belonged to a guy from a totally different one that hardly mattered at all to the events of homestuck. he just mattered to us. you could parse this ending in a lot of different ways, but i think the interpretation i like best is that the story is ours now, and no authority figure, not andrew hussie, not aysha u farah, and certainly not ultimate dirk, can change that. this ending reminded me that homestuck is mine and no one can take it away from me. i needed to hear that.
