Garden Pests: Mexican Bean Beetle

This is why I love gardening. No matter how many life cycles come and go, there is always something new that gives you pause to say “What the fuhhhhk is that?”

My romano bean leaves are absolutely destroyed but I didn’t notice the culprit until now. I found these sulfur yellow hairy looking polyps and they rudbeckia out to be something called Mexican Bean Beetles. They are in the ladybug family, but unlike its sisters this is one of the few species that feed on plants rather than other insects. Adults and larvae feed on leaf, flower, or pod tissue of legumes.

I never spray so I hand picked the larvae and eggs…let’s see if that saves all the other legumes I’ve planted.
