Pet ER Card Update

Well, we brought her in for a distended belly, and as you can (maybe) tell from her x-ray, her abdomen is full of fluid.

The ER vet suspects that she might have IBD and suggested an endoscopy at some point. We elected to take her home with a plan for outpatient treatment with some meds (and the need to follow up with the internal medicine vet on Monday. 😕

It's so heartbreaking for us, because we thought she had been doing better. And to be honest, I'm worried we're getting close to the end of what we can do for her financially. I'm thankful for good credit and a high balance available on my amex, but this is hard right now.

We are talking around it but know we may need to make a tough decision within the next year, if not before.

I am only just now getting the time and emotional stability to write this. My darling cat had to be taken to the emergency room because she ate three lily petals. Lilies are EXTREMELY TOXIC to cats, like, they literally range from very toxic to lethal. Every part of the plant is dangerous to a cat and unfortunately she at a rather... lethal one. As of today we know that she’s going to be okay and she’s coming home tonight with a very good prognosis but I know if I had waited any longer (it was probably about 20min? maybe less? I’m not entirely sure, before we took her) it wouldn’t have been good, and if I had waited a day I would’ve lost her. To any and all pet owner, please go to ASPCA’s website and just browse their section of toxic and non-toxic plants, it may just save their life. After all of this... I’m putting her on some pet insurance and I highly recommend that if you’re pet isn’t on some you get some. If she had some this wouldn’t have been into the thousands on making sure she lives. I’m looking into Embrace Pet Insurance, it’s highly rated and has great reviews. Give your fur babies some lovein’s for me <3

Sucky end to the work week. Had a kitten 5 months old come in around 6am, the owners neighbors dog attacked the kitten. He was already dead when he came in. Not 20 minutes later had a lady bring in a cat who called 45 minutes prior, saying her cat was trying to vomit something, they didn't know what he got into. Got the cat out of the carrier- he was panting/seizing, pinpoint pupils, 107.7*F temperature, and diarrhea with a green/blue or teal color. We all know that color, the cat got into rat poison. Looking at his symptoms he got into the kind that causes cerebral edema- brain swelling. He was an emergency euthanasia, there was no way to save him, he would have been dead within the hour. Really freaking sad, this is why I don't approve of cats that are allowed to free roam outside. My cats can go in/out of a enclosure, but last week one of the four dogs that live down the street got into my cat enclosure and killed one of my cats wiThin the 20 minutes of my roommate leaving and my arriving home. I still don't understand how there are plenty of ledges for him to get up and away from them, and he had access to the house. I think because there was four of them they kind of surrounded the enclosure and he panicked, and the dog found a weak spot where the chicken wire was attached to the 4x4. The dogs are gone now, but I'll defiantly be reinforcing it with thick gauged wielded leftover fence I have and only opening the cat door when I'm home from now on to avoid anything like this from happening again. Over the weekend we had a cat come in with a history of bartonella, aka cat scratch fever. The cat apparently kept getting reinfected, therefore there are other cats in the area that are also infected and are spreading the disease, her cat was one of the. The owner was letting the cat outside knowing that the cat will effect other cats and human if she scratches any of them. Keep your cats indoors or in a secure enclosure, if you live in a rural area or not there are still many other dangers for a cat other than roads. I don't understand why people risk it.

This little kitten is cure as fuck, and so freaking sweet. He rolls over on his back and wants to be loved, purring so loud.  I was a little worried because he hadn't urinated or had a bm movement, so I ended up expressing his very large bladder in his litterbox before going to my mother's. Did so in case he did have some nerve damage from the car (at first I was afraid his bladder may have be ruptured in the trauma since I don't recall seeing one on the x-rays which is why I was feeling for one in the first place) and wasn't able to express himself. Got home and he had both urine and had several bowl movements, so yay! I can rest easy. He probably just hurt, I know I would be in pain if I tried passing a BM with a broken pelvis. 

But my friend might be interested in him so I'm super excited! While I would love to keep him I already have 3 cats and a dog, my room mate would tear me a new one. I took him with the intention of finding him a really good home, and if she does take him I can at least see him still! 

In case you're wondering wtf is going on- I rescued a kitten Tuesday night who was going to be euthanized at work after being run over by the owner's car. The owners didn't have money for diagnostics or anything so the next best thing was euthanasia- especially if they couldn't afford pain meds. Well I feel in love with the bugger, he was walking a little so I knew he must not have been -too- broken. The doctor took an x-ray and his pelvis was broken and he has a luxation of his leg. Kittens heal extremely fast, and the break wouldn't effect his pelvic canal region, so instead of putting him to sleep we got to owners to sign him over and I took him home :] He'll heal just fine with cage rest, and he has his pain meds. He'll be tested, vaccinate and neutered in all due time.
