Album Review: Petlib - Maker
Petlib. (Formerly Pet Library.) are a three-piece experimental Metal/ Post-Rock band from London, England. Pet Library was originally a two-piece Emo project, starting in 2016 but have since gained a member and begun producing a new sound whilst reshaping themselves into Petlib. Their latest single ‘Shell’ is just a taste of what their upcoming album will be like, with it being deemed as one of the heavier songs on the album, they have said to of used the sound and lyrics as a starting concept for the process that is due for release early August.
The album will be called ‘Maker’ with the core concept being the journey of a higher power. Possession, corruption, religion, all elements that can be explored not only lyrically but instrumentally which they have captured with the song ‘Shell’. Released in May it is a heavy, daunting sound with striking instruments that are supplemented by sludgy effects and an ominous ringing to the ears. The vocals are simple but induce a brutal kick to the stomach announcing ‘I am God’. Rather than using the song to preach religious ideals, the elements have been subliminally used to build a vision for the listener to indulge into this world and begin to follow the story.
I am personally a huge fan of concept albums, one of my favorites being ‘From Mars to Sirius’ by Gojira due to the emotion it conveys and heavy ambiance. I can tell from the group's announcements and ‘Shell’ that we will be delighted with the same sort of experience.
The concept of the album will follow the story of a Scientist who becomes the God of a world they have created inside their own mind. With such a Thriller movie story line and a heavy first single, you can only imagine the emotional struggle and representation that will be played with throughout this album. Band’s being able to discover a story line together often allows for overlapping ideas and experiences to come into the lyrical content. While there are elements of truth for someone out there, members cooperating on lyrical stories are able to generate something of its own ‘being’ rather than a direct personal experience.
‘Maker’ will be released on August the 9th by Beth Shalom records.
