So, we put down our 13 year old cat today. She had mammary tumors and was clearly going downhill. This is my first time putting down a pet I raised from kittenhood.

We put her to sleep at home. She went peacefully in my arms.

I used to take her out late at night, like 2am when the neighborhood was quiet. She was always a nervous cat and would hang close to me and explore, sniffing all the neighbors houses. The last time we went out for a significant amount of time was earlier this week. She got all the way to the end of the sidewalk.

A car went past and she bolted back to the house.

I panicked and ran to the door and she wasn't there. For a moment I was terrified-

And then she emerged from behind the AC unit and ran to the door like "Mother, use your magic thumbs and let me in!"

The fact that she bolted home. That she knew where to go.

It made me think of my main wish for her when she went.

"May you have many night adventures, where you're never scared, and remember, my heart is the house you can always run home to."

My boy. My baby. A week shy of your 17th birthday, you told us you were ready. May you find your sisters who passed before you over the rainbow bridge.

You came to us 13 years ago because your mom knew we would be able to give you your best life. And that's what we did. You loved to give kisses. You loved to go on car rides, and sit on the back of my neice's carseat so you could see the world. You loved sticks, and balls, and holding dental sticks in your mouth like cigars while you strutted around.

Bossdog. Boo. Snickers. Snack.

It was time. It hurts, but it was time. Love you, baby boy.
