Zayne, saw he had another appointment with you and couldn’t help but sigh. He had just seen you two weeks beforehand. What could have possibly brought you into his office, again? He smiled as he skimmed through your chart. You were always a magnet for trouble ever since he’d met you in college.
You’d bumped into him in the hallway, clumsy little thing you were, and made him drop all his books and ever since then the rest had been history. At the time you two had met he was working towards being a doctor, and you? Well, you were as undecided as you had always been, and just when you were about to figure it all out you had gotten into an accident. Fast forward to several years down the line, Zayne had become the doctor he’d set out to be and you had your own little online craft shop that kept you afloat.
Suddenly, someone had knocked softly at the door and seconds later the door was slowly pushed open. Walking into the room was Dr. Zayne, tall and handsome. Although, you tried your best not to think about it too much. He sat at his desk and had begun to turn on his computer, logging into the portal so that he can begin making a note of everything.
“So..” His voice trailed off, eyes focused on the computer screen. “What happened this time?”
You shifted in your seat uncomfortably. “I uh, I fell.. again.”
He hummed to himself. “I see.”
For a few moments it was quiet, more than you’d liked it to be. Then finally, Zayne broke the silence, turning his chair so that he could face you better.
“How did the fall occur?” He asked.
All of a sudden you started to feel very hot. You were humiliated, and the last thing you wanted was to tell Zayne of all people, even if he was your doctor.
You exhaled a shaky breath. “Well, I was bringing in groceries up to my apartment. All was fine until I was going up the second flight of stairs, that’s when I lost control of my balance and fell onto my back.”
Zayne said nothing but you knew he had heard you. You fiddled with your fingers, too nervous to look him in the eye. A part of you wondered if you should’ve switched doctors. You wished you had, but you could never quite bring yourself to do that. Maybe it was because you felt at ease in his presence. That couldn’t be true though, because of how your blood pressure always spiked whenever you had an appointment.
Zayne adjusted his glasses and looked at you. “Where does it hurt?”
“Mostly my lower back, but my legs have been hurting, too.” You replied.
“On a scale of one to ten, ten being the most, how severe is the pain?” He questioned.
So professional
“Uhm, I’d say a seven for my back and five for my legs.” You said nervously.
“Alright, I’m gonna do quick exam. Is that alright?”
Zayne patiently waited for your consent before asking you to move onto the examination table. He was kind enough to help you up, always a respectful man. You tried to insist you could get up there on your own but Zayne scoffed when you did so. ‘Now’s not the time to be stubborn,’ he replied.
After you had properly propped yourself up on the table you waited nervously and patiently for Dr. Zayne to continue. Standing in front of you, he warned about the sudden coldness before pressing the stethoscope to your chest. After a few deep breaths he deduced that at the very least your breathing and heart were okay, just as he suspected.
Then he moved on to pressing down on various spots of your back, asking you if it hurt and if so how much before moving forward. Afterwards he did the same to your legs, nothing too concerning. He finally asked you to stand up so that he could ask you to twist and bend your back to test the severity of the pain, but again nothing alarming. Although, it was not visible on his face, Zayne was relieved that you were okay. This was the exact outcome he was hoping for, and the one he had expected in all honesty.
After asking you to return to your seat, he had reassured you everything seemed to be normal. “I’m prescribing some medication to help you through the pain. I’d advise against any extraneous activity as of right now.”
“I see..” You looked down at your lap.
Concern started to seep its way back into Zayne’s body, again. “Are you disappointed?”
Your head shot up out of shock and unintentionally you gave him a rather distasteful expression. “What do you mean?”
Perhaps he had spoken too soon, or rather too harshly. He had forgotten about your past history, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t care.
“Forget I said anything.” He said, but you were unwilling to do so.
“I’m just worried that maybe you might’ve missed something. You know what? Nevermind.. I know how ridiculous this sounds.” You shook your head as if to shoo the thoughts away.
Just as you were about to stand up and grab your walker to walk out the door, a hand reached out and grabbed your wrist.
“Wait.” Zayne pleaded.
Deep down you felt embarrassed by how you reacted to the situation, but you couldn’t help but try to place your trust in Zayne, again. Reassuring yourself that he would never do anything to put you in harms way, you decided to hear him out.
He sighed. “If you’d like more extensive exam, or a second opinion, I can most certainly arrange that for you.”
But that was not what you wanted. What did you want?
You turned to Zayne frowned. “Would you be willing to do the full exam?”
Zayne cleared his throat. He hadn’t expected you to suggest that.
“I apologize but I must decline. I don’t think it would be appropriate given the.. circumstances.” He confessed, refusing to look in your direction. “But I would be more than glad to arrange that exam with another doctor.”
You shook your head and smiled at him. Giving a gentle squeeze to his hand you replied, “That won’t be necessary.”
Zayne raised his brow. “It is unusual for you to trust so easily.”
You looked into his eyes and smiled. “Have you ever given me a reason not to?”
He thought for a moment before chuckling. “I guess I see your point.”
Awkwardly you let go of Zayne’s hand and stuffed your hands into your pockets as he went over your after care plan. Before long you were being escorted out of the office, but just as you were about to distance yourself from Zayne he spoke up.
“Wait.” He caught up with you quickly. “Let me drive you home. It’s the least I can do.”
You chuckled. “Dr. Zayne, that’s hardly necessary.”
He sighed. “Okay, how do you plan on getting home?”
You thought for a moment. “Same as always. I was gonna take the bus.”
Zayne shook his head and moved closer to you until he was beside you. “Not in your condition you won’t.”
Using your walker you moved so that you were facing Zayne better. “Oh? Is this another part of the doctors orders?”
He nodded. “Precisely.”
You sighed with a smirk on your face. “Well, then I’ll just have to listen won’t I?”
He smiled at you before placing a hand on the curve of your back, leading you carefully out of the hospital and towards his car. Even if you would never admit it to Zayne, you secretly loved when this side of him came out. It made you feel like the most special person in the entire world, but that’s simply how it felt to be in Zayne’s presence.
