* unknown artists: Αναστενάρια: Music Of The Fire Walkers (2008)

A mammoth and monumental field recording capturing festive sounds and cultural rituals of the Αναστενάρια, a fire dance taken place every January and May in Northern Greek and Southern Bulgarian villages. The Αναστενάρια here is performed by descendants of refugees who arrived in Greece from Thrace after the Balkan Wars and Greece / Turkey Population Exchange of the early 20th Century. These twice-a-year festivals are dedicated to Saint Constantine and Saint Helen, where idol worship, dancing, music, and animal sacrifices ensue for three straight days each leading up to the climax: a fire-walking ritual where villagers dance for hours on end before stepping into the bed of hot coals unharmed. Recorded in Serre’s Agia Eleni village in May 1979 and issued by Editions Zero in 2008, the sounds captured here encapsulates the congregation of population voices and the entrancing, hypnotic and sometimes thunderous sounds that signify the saints’ powers that captivate the souls of the villagers.

Music Of The Fire Walkers is ten tracks of victory, life, and culture documented and provided by an unknown source, all numbered by the Grecian language. Two additional remixes are appended at the end of both vinyl and digital releases: an erratic, noisy contribution by Pete Swanson and a grueling, crackling-hot version by Vatican Shadow. These two takes may as well helped the album’s draw and visibility for an album that’s only seen 200 copies pressed.
