Process [Yr1]
Hand-bound workbooks from my 1st year at university.
Summer Project [2]
I've done little bits for it here and there, but not anything proper yet. I have a few choices to decide what I want my system to be, and I came up with an idea of how I want my book to look, so it's a good start.
I prefer the crafts and hand-made aspect of design, so it seems fitting that the first project for my 2nd year of university is something that represents what I like doing and what sorts of things I enjoy creating.
I'd love to design a typographic book for print at some-point in the near future, but I'm afraid I'd get too obsessed with measurements and layouts.
Summer Project [1]
My summer project for uni started yesterday! Everyone in my class gets an email every Monday, giving us a task to do.
We need to complete these tasks, and record them with a system that we have made. The outcome needs to be an A5 book, presenting the system we used.
The first task we all got yesterday was 'Fix something for someone.' Now I need to find something to fix ASAP. I'm excited, so hopefully I'll be able to come up with an idea that can convey how eager I am.
The relief I get when my portfolio just about fits into one box.
A Tip!
This might sound silly/obvious, but writing out my thoughts, developments and plans onto my blog throughout my Dungeness project really helped me when it came to doing a write-up evaluation of the project.
I thought the idea of a blog was so people could see my work, but really I think it has worked out best for me as a log to record what I think and do. I find it difficult to do write-ups on paper, but compiling what I've said on here into a paragraph is a piece of cake - highly recommend!
Dungeness project is [basically] finished now, pictures will come soon.
Problem Solved
In my last post I showed an initial sketch plan of a Dungeness engine, however I mentioned that there was something wrong with it which I couldn't figure out.
Well actually:
It hit me that the images work better if the page was turned landscape, so that there is space for the engine parts to explode around the engine base, rather than only top and bottom [I should've figured that out earlier!]
For some reason, as I was working through my developments my work started getting more grid-like in how the parts were being placed. It was accidental, but a happy accident! I've re-done a couple of pages, and it looks much better now.
Using pure black lines with only 2 thickness variations on the page works well, so I reckon I'm gonna keep it that way.
I can't find a good reason to use colour, so I'm going to leave it out.

I rarely post my thought-processes on here, but I thought it would be nice to share my developments of today.
Lots to get done tomorrow!
Margate Project Idea, I Think?
In my honest opinion, Turner Contemporary was the best thing to happen to Margate for a long time. When I've heard my peers speak of the building it always comes across as an ugly thing that doesn't fit in. I kept quiet, but I really love the building, both interior and exterior.
Maybe if the rest of Margate was a lot more like the (fairly) recent Turner Contemporary building, a big wave of people would come to see a very modern looking location! If the new Tesco has a very modern and geometric style exterior it might beef up the area!? People don't want to move to Margate, but maybe a new superstore is what Margate needs - a town can't live off one puny Morrisions forever, be real!
I know this comes across as a bit of a joke, and I guess that's what I'm aiming for. It's a serious matter taken out of context and made to house the other end of the *big* argument concerning Margate and it's old ways.
A lot of people are looking into restoring Margate to how it used to be, but is this really an ideal ideology?
Uni Projects To Get Done
I have an essay on participatory culture to get finish off. I've done half of a 1st draft, but I'm far from happy with it. I'm in the middle of revising it ALL, hopefully I'll manage to finish it off this weekend so it can be checked over and revised next week before the deadline on Friday.
I posted a few bits on here for my Margate project, but I haven't managed to do ANYTHING for it this week. I came up with an idea but I don't love it, at all. The place is kinda cool I guess, but not cool enough to want to make something from it.
On Thursday everyone visited Dungeness, that was pretty awesome. It was a much more inspiring place than Margate, and is a much better project to get to grips with. I get to make a map of some sorts and some type amongst other things. The work I produce for this will be very edgy with geometry and shapes; can't wait to play around with some ideas.
I definitely know what I'd rather be getting on with out of the 3 tasks, but I also know how to get my priorities right - essay it is!
[expect to see some work-in-progress from the Margate & Dungeness projects]
[actually, no promises for the Margate project]
