PBA Media Bureau For the past few seasons, Allein Maliksi had been waiting for his turn, acting as an understudy for the old Purefoods franchise’s main stars like James Yap and Peter June Simon. But it looks like Maliksi’s time has finally come as he has stepped into a much more prominent role under new Star coach Chito Victolero. With the departure of Yap, who was traded for point guard Paul Lee before the season, Maliksi will have his chance to become one of the Hotshots’ top guns. “For sure, ito na yung pinaka-break niya,” Yap’s old running mate Simon told InterAksyon.com in an exclusive interview. “Dati kasi medyo malalim pa yung bench. Ngayon wala na si James, ito na yung pagkakataon niya.” Against Alaska last week, Maliksi was entrusted with the big shots, although he did have some crucial misses in the endgame. In this game against TNT, he continued to be solid as he scored 13 points to help his team get back on track when it comes to wins. Though he did not need to play hero in this one, the fact that he is being given the chances when the game is on the line bodes well for the confidence that his coach and teammates have in him. “Yung potential niya dati pa namang andiyan. Star’s PJ Simon delivers in matchup vs old teammate James Yap

PBA Media Bureau Star Hotshots coach Chito Victolero knew that his team’s matchup against its old long-time franchise player James Yap could be an emotional one. But he made sure to neutralize that as he placed Peter June Simon, Yap’s long-time running mate, on the two-time PBA MVP to make sure he had to work on both ends of the floor, a plan that yielded positive results for the Hotshots. “That was really the game plan. Matchup ni PJ is James Yap. Matchup ni Mark Barroca si Jeff Chan. That’s our game plan,” Victolero said. The ‘Scoring Apostle’ finished with a team-high 16 points, most them coming against ‘Big Game James’ himself, as Star extended its winning streak to three games following a 99-91 victory over Yap’s Rain or Shine team. The Hotshots’ focus on Simon as an offensive focal point was deliberate in this one as they put pressure on Yap to have to defend his old teammate. “Gusto naming pagtrabahuhin siya sa defense so we’re giving PJ room to operate,” the Star coach said. Yap, meanwhile, was limited to nine points on 3-for-10 shooting as the Star defense locked in on him as well. “Nag-do-double sila sa akin kaya yung field goal ko hindi ganun kataas,” Yap said. “Naka-focus yung depensa sa akin. Once pumoposte ako dumo-double sila sa akin. Maganda yung game plan nila.” Yap, though, wasn’t too surprised about being outplayed by Simon, having no problem giving credit where it was due. “Si PJ magaling naman talaga. James Yap expecting ribbing from old ‘Big Three’ teammates: ‘Malamang alaskado ako sa dalawa’

PBA Media Bureau Life without the rest of the Purefoods franchise’s old ‘Big Three’ hasn’t exactly been easy for James Yap, who is now a member of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Seven championships and countless memorable moments in over a decade as teammates are not easy to forget, and especially the bonds of friendship that they formed. On Sunday, that wasn’t made any easier as Yap had to face his old teammates Marc Pingris and Peter June Simon when his new Rain or Shine team faced the Star Hotshots. The two-time PBA MVP struggled against his former team while his old buddy Simon torched him for 16 points as the Elasto Painters lost, 99-91. Yap could not do anything but shake off the defeat following the game. “Ganun talaga ang basketball. May natatalo, may nananalo,” Yap said. But he did share a nice moment with his old teammates after the game, walking over to the opposite side to acknowledge them and even hugging a few of his old friends. “Siya pa nga yung lumapit sa amin,” Pingris told InterAksyon.com. “Okay talaga siya na kaibigan. Alam niya na trabaho lang talaga kami kapag nasa loob ng court.” “Pero sa labas, pwede kaming mag-dinner together. Ngayon, sabay-sabay kaming mag-di-dinner.” Pingris, Simon and Yap were collectively hosting an event after the game and the Rain or Shine player is already expecting some friendly banter to be exchanged. “Malamang alaskado ako sa dalawa. Simon hopes Ratliffe gets return stint with Hotshots

Star may have just concluded its Commissioner’s Cup campaign, but the team may be flanking the same roster come the Governors’ Cup on July. Peter June Simon is hopeful that the Hotshots will trot the same crew when the third conference rolls on. “Yung ganda ng nilaro namin, mainly dahil kay Ricardo (Ratliffe). Sobrang fit nya sa team so hopefully, makasama namin ulit sya (We played a great game, mainly because of Ricardo. He is really fit for the team so hopefully we can play with him again.),” he said. Star can bring back Ratliffe as its cumulative standings from the first two conferences placed it among the bottom four, all of which can bring a reinforcement foe to the Governors’ Cup with a 6-foot-9 height limit. Replacing Denzel Bowles midway in the conference, Ratliffe has made a good account of himself, averaging 27.50 points, 18.12 rebounds, 2.38 assists, and 1.25 blocks in his eight games. More importantly, he was a driving force for the eight-seed Star as it pushed San Miguel to the limit in their quarterfinal pairing. “Tamang tama rin yung dating nya dahil nagkataon din na parang nakaka-adjust na kami sa sistema ni coach (His arrival came just right when we have adjusted to coach’s system),” Simon said. But a furious San Miguel rally dashed that upset bid as the Hotshots exited the tournament thanks to a 103-99 Game 2 defeat on Wednesday. Star coach Jason Webb acknowledges the huge impact Ratliffe has done to his squad, but he remains non-committal of the 27-year-old reinforcement’s possible return. The ‘Bored’ Three? Tim Cone counting on Purefoods Star’s slumping trio to bring team back to old heights

Sports5/Pranz Kaeno Billones The Purfoods Star Hotshots may have opened the Governors’ Cup on a high note – an 89-85 victory over NLEX on Saturday – but their coach, Tim Cone believes that if the team is to make a return to the form that helped them win four straight PBA titles, it will have to start with their ‘Big Three’ of James Yap, Marc Pingris and Peter June Simon. “We’re not playing as well as we should be. I still feel it’s a struggle for our Big Three, just to stay focused,” Cone told sportswriters after the game. “They played so much basketball and they won so much, they’re kinda feeling bored with the game a little bit.” The team has played almost non-stop basketball while making four straight finals appearances from the 2012-2013 Governors’ Cup to last season’s Grand Slam and Cone thinks it’s taking its toll on the star trio. They only combined to score 19 points between them against NLEX. The two-time MVP Yap had only seven on 3-for-11 shooting while defensive ace Pingris tallied eight points, although he did have nine rebounds. Simon, the one-time super sub, chipped in only four points. The talented Hotshots still managed to pull off the win thanks to a great effort from import Marqus Blakely, who had 29 points, 18 rebounds, seven steals and five blocks and Alex Mallari, who contributed 15 markers. “It’s very difficult from a coaching standpoint to keep them involved. Totally, I can relate to that. They played a lot of basketball, Ping, especially,” Cone added. Pingris, of course, had been playing for the Gilas Pilipinas national team as well. “I’ve been on Ping really hard for the last weeks or so, in trying to focus and get going. We live and die with him. It’s been a struggle.” It has been two conferences now since their last championship, getting the boot in the quarterfinals and semifinals of this season’s Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup. Cone is counting on his the team finding that sense of urgency soon. “The farther we get away from the Grand Slam, the more the hunger will return to everybody and we’ll start focusing on playing the way we can play,” Cone said. “But I don’t think we have done that since the Grand Slam finish. I’m okay with it now, because I understand it, but it’s getting to a point where it’s not okay anymore. We’ve got to start picking it up. We’ve got to start picking it up emotionally in terms of desire and hunger and eventually, we’ll figure out a way to climb back on top of the mountain,” the coach added. “But we seem so very far from that mountain now. Other teams are just playing better than us, are hungrier than us, so at some point we’re going to start questioning ourselves. This team knows what it’s about. Kung totoo man na nag-eexist ka na, well, ang swerte mo girl. Ang swerte ng identity mong pagiging girlfriend ni Peter June Simon.

You should know, you broke hundreds, if not, thousands of hearts. :(

Pero hindi kita kinukonsensiya. Pero siguro naman, alam mo na maraming fans si PJ at hindi lang puro lalaki yun dahil magaling siyang mag-basketball.

Maraming siyang fangirls.

Bakit? Ano bang special sa boyfriend mo?

I'm sure, you already know this...all these reasons. He wouldn't be a special person in your life kung hindi mo alam 'to. But still, let me highlight those reasons. And some requests from a humble fan :)

1. Special si PJ kasi...magaling siyang basketball player. Duh.

Una naman napansin si PJ dahil sa basketball skills niya, hindi ba?

When he plays, he makes it seem that basketball is so easy. He attacks the baseline like it's nobody's business. He makes those jumpers as if he was born to do that. Perfect Jumper Simon nga, diba? His life is basketball. He breathes for the sport. I wish that you could support him in his passion. Watch his games. Every game.

Okay, hindi realistic yung EVERY game kasi siyempre, may sariling buhay ka naman. But it'd be great if you know the schedule of his games. This way, we know that you care for our Scoring Apostle and what makes him happy. After all, you already belong to the list that makes him happy :) (Huhuhu. Joke lang)

2.Special si PJ kasi...humble siya, down-to-Earth at attainable. He still remembers his humble beginnings. Si PJ, hindi yan top-pick sa PBA draft. But is he ashamed of that? No. That humility paved off kaya naman ay star na siya ngayon. Nag-pursigi siya pero hindi niya kinalimutan kung saan siya nagsimula. Nagdonate pa nga raw siya para sa isang basketball court sa elementary school niya. Nag-oorganize din ng mga outreach programs yan. Ang swerte mo talaga, girl. Nasabi ko na ba yun?

Kaya naman, I hope you appreciate his roots as well. Appreciate the culture from where he came from. Kasi yung pinanggalingan niya, yun yung bumubuo kung sino si PJ Simon ngayon.

Oo nga pala, speaking of humble, obvious na hindi rin mayabang yung boyfriend mo. Kahit ang dami niyang pwede ipagmayabang. Well, rare naman kasi sa Purefoods players ang mag-yabang kahit pa maka-tira ng mga tres o makapag-dunk. Kaya naman, as his fan, I ask na ikaw na lang ang mag-cheer at mag-yabang kay PJ. Not in a negative way. But be proud of him and his achievements.

3. Special si PJ kasi...duh, gwapo siya. Isa mga pinakagwapong players ng PBA.

Oo, ang babaw ng rason na yun. Pero come on! Kaya naman lalong kinikilig ang fangirls sa basketball skills niya ay dahil minsan, in the rarest of opportunities, bigla na lang makikita mong naka-ngiti siya pag naka-shoot siya.  At grabe, nakamamatay na ngiti. Yung ngiting nakakaloko, nakakaadik kasi minsan mo lang makita.

At dahil nga gwapo ang boyfriend mo, mas marami kang "kaagaw". Pero, kaming mga loyal fans niya, we are (trying to be, trying real hard to be) happy for him. For the both of you. Kasi finally, magiging masaya na lalo si PJ. May makakasama na siya if ever may mga problema siya. May makakausap na siya. May karamay. At finally, baka meron nang mag-update sa amin kung nasaang lupalop siya ng mundo o kaya naman ay mag-share ng kung anu-anong info about him para lalo namin siyang makilala.

Kokonti pa lang yang mga characteristics na nabanggit ko kung bakit special si PJ. But he really is all that...and more.

Baka umabot ng ilang pages ito kung ililista ko lahat.

A lot of girls are wishing they have your identity, the honor of being PJ Simon's girlfriend. Pero at the end of the day, sino ba naman kami? Hindi mo naman kailangan sundin yang mga request na yan. Alam kong alam mong hindi mo nga kailangan tapusin ang pagbabasa nito. Pero, special kasi talaga si PJ para sa amin. At one point in a fangirl's life, in a Simonatic's life, humiling kami na kami na lang. Kami na lang ulit.

Joke. Ang drama. Alam kong maswerte rin si PJ sa'yo. You must be one special girl for him to get back to the dating scene, right? :)
