I do love your Peter/Marcus headcanons. Can I request some headcanons about nightmares and comforting each other?
Marcus knows how to deal with other people’s nightmares. There’s usually a trick to them, no matter if they’re men, women, or children. Gabriel had needed familiarity. Rhymes they both knew, or friendly stuffed animals, or his mother, standing white-faced and wan by the door. Tomas needed- needs- a hand on his cheek, or in his hair.
Peter needs his nightmares shouted down.
Marcus knows to pin Peter’s arms so he doesn’t twist his wrists if he struggles. He knows how to hold Peter, the bigger man, down, whispering fierce reassurances into his ear. Peter’s nightmares build up inside him like a cresting wave before they crash, and when they inevitably do, Marcus knows how to weather them.
He’s not gentle with Peter, when Peter is panicking. He holds him down and shouts if he has to, shouts until his love is louder than Kosovo. Shouts until the fire goes out in Peter’s brain, and he stares up at him with wet eyes like he’s seeing Marcus for the first time.
And Peter… Peter has never known anyone else who had nightmares like his.
Peter doesn’t know what to do the first time he wakes to Marcus’ ragged breathing. He’s curled up inwards on himself, half on his side and half on his belly, like a dying animal. He sounds like one too, though his panicked whimpers are muffled by the pillow, and Peter doesn’t know what to do.
So he gets his arms tight around him and holds him, firmly and carefully, because Peter’s learned that firm and careful is the best way to handle Marcus.
Peter runs his hand flat up and down Marcus’ chest. He can feel out his ribs beneath the threadbare cotton of his undershirt. He doesn’t bother with prayers, or litanies. Marcus was always better with words than he. So instead he hums a low, growly tune, something aimless and vaguely Johnny Cash, and shushes Marcus quietly at the back of his neck.
That first night, it’s a long time before Marcus relaxes.
The next time, it happens quicker.
The next time, all it takes it Peter’s hand on his back, a shh, a low murmur of I got you, kid, keep your head, and Marcus’ nightmares slink back into the darkness, and leave him be.
