A fascinating dimension to “Gaudy Night” is that sure yes Shrewsbury college COULD appeal to authority about their poison pen issue but as women’s right to education is hard-won, and as they’re pretty sure the miscreant is one of their staff — and, as a fascist regressive regime has come into power in the country next door, and as regressive attitudes towards women in the public sphere are on the rise at home — they obviously want to handle the whole thing quietly. Hitler’s Germany is merely one dimension to their overall desire to avoid scandal and preserve women’s access to higher education.
