Happy Birthday to and remembering Pete Shelley 🖤 (April 17, 1955 - December 6, 2018) R.I.P. 🥀 Born Peter Campbell McNeish had his stage name Shelley named after the romantic poet/author/philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley who was the husband of Mary Shelley, the author of “Frankenstein”. Robert Smith cited Buzzcocks as one of his biggest influences on The Cure early on in their inception and he regarded Buzzcocks and Elvis Costello as the punk Beatles. Pete Shelley originally formed the seminal punk rock band Buzzcocks with cofounder and singer songwriter Howard Devoto in 1976. And as Devoto left one year later in 1977 to form Magazine one of the first post punk bands, Pete Shelley became the lead singer and guitarist. Shelley released his debut solo album titled “Sky Yen” in 1980 which was originally recorded in 1974 when he had initially become interested in electronic music in college. It was an experimental electronic album with the use of a single electronic oscillator with an added potentiometer. After the band broke up in 1981 Shelley continued on as a solo artist implementing more synthesizers with such notable hits as “Homosapien” off of the first album with the same title and “Telephone Operator” off of the second album titled “XL1“. Buzzcocks later reformed in 1989 with Pete Shelley and still continue without him after his passing with original member Steve Diggle on lead vocals.
