Cleaning unused record photos out of my phone: Go West’s biggest US hit, “King of Wishful Thinking,” never had it’s 12” remix released here. After years of wondering what the remix sounded like, I found a European copy on Discogs cheap enough to rationalize ordering it—and found out why: It’s boring. It’s a shame they couldn’t bring back Julian Mendelssohn, who did all those epic-sounding remixes from their first album; no doubt he would have knocked it out of the park.

@petercoxphotography Easily the most famous landmark on the Aran Islands, Dún Aonghasa on Inis Mór, Co. Galway, is magnificent. Perched nearly 100 metres above the foaming Atlantic, with massive thick stone walls, it's easy to see why so many people visit here each year. Indeed, most visitors to Inis Mór are daytrippers who want only to see this place and then leave the island—a shame, as there are many other amazing sights to see.⠀ ⠀ As a result of its popularity, during the middle of the day, the fort can be overrun with people, somewhat spoiling the impact of this incredible place. Went to a record fair in Garden City this morning and while I found a few punk goodies that will appear on the site soon, this was probably the most unlikely purchase I made. As a kid, I dug Go West—here in the US, they were marketed as new wave with jazz and big-band flourishes; I had no idea at the time that back in the U.K., they were cheesy teen pinup fodder, and was duly mortified when I found out. Take that aspect away, though, and they were what they were—they wrote moderately better than average pop songs and Peter Cox could belt with the best of the era. In retrospect, I think my major attraction to their music was the incredible production that Julian Mendelssohn put into their remixes, turning dinky home studio 8-track recordings into crashing epics that are sonic marvels to this day. Anyway, I came across this autographed 7-inch for a pittance and the 16-year-old in me insisted. After a quick comparison to examples on the internet to ensure it was legit, I picked it up, listened to it at home and you know what? I forgot that they were pretty good.
