This is probably the largest art I've made in a long time; it's 16x48 inches at 300dpi. All of the animals are inspired by petroglyphs and cave art from around the world on top of the shapes found within the animals themselves. It started with the center buck who was originally drawn in my sketchbook and slowly began to take on a life of its own. I'd love to paint this on a building somewhere.

Petroglyphs at the Rock Art Discovery Trail. Millville Historic Townsite, Cochise County, Arizona.

These are all Hohokam-era glyphs, though rock art attributed to Archaic Period indigenous peoples can also be found at the Millville site.

Most of the Hohokam glyphs at Millville depict game animals, anthropomorphic figures, or astronomical symbols, but a few mysterious images defy interpretation. To me there is something especially poignant about the more inscrutable patterns. The labor and effort required to make them shows that they must have been important to their creators, but with meanings hidden and lost to later viewers.
