PFL 1 Proves That Money is a Big Motivator

For all the fights during the PFL 1 event one thing that showed was the sense of urgency coming from both fighters in almost every bout. It makes sense when a large prize purse is on the line. Of the 12 bouts featured, many were finishes and all the winners’ earned points to advance one step closer to the million dollar prize money.

At face value when trying to introduce something new skepticism is expected and in MMA it is common. The PFL format sounds like a tournament and that has been done before and done away with but this is different.  Yes, it is MMA and the fights are still using most of the same rules, three five minute rounds and everything fans are used to but the reward is different than just fighting up a list of rankings and trying to call out fighters. The wins earn points and the points get you closer to the prize money so while the concept of a league format seemed odd before PFL 1, it became clear Thursday night in Madison Square Garden. You fight to win and if you finish you advance.

The heavyweights may have stolen the show with two high profile knockouts. One from Kelvin Tiller who if you have not heard the name yet, you will likely see highlight reel first round knock of Caio Alencar circulating the internet over the weekend. The other Alex Nicholson who fired up the main card broadcast on NBCSN when he finished Jake Huen in round two with a flying knee.

Fighters that win earn points towards the 2018 playoffs and those that win, come closer to winning the million dollar prize money for their weight class.

Francimar Barroso defeated Daniel Gallemore at 3:57 of the first round by TKO (doctor stoppage) and earned six points

Alexandre Almeida defeated Lee Coville by armbar at 1:22 of the first round and earned six points

Steve Siler defeated Magomed Idrisov by submission (triangle choke) at 4:19 of round one and earned six points

Kelvin Tiller defeated Caio Alencar by knockout at 3:34 of the first round and earned six points

Nazareno Malegarie defeated Marcos Galvao by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 and 29-28) to earn three points

Jared Rosholt defeated Valdrin Istrefi by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-25 and 29-28) to earn three points

Alex Nicholson defeated Jake Heun by knockout (flying knee) at 58 seconds of the second round and earned five points

Timur Valiev defeated Max Coga by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 and 30-27) and earned three points

Lance Palmer defeated Bekbulat Magomedov by submission (rear naked-choke) at 3:21 of the second round and earned five points

Andre Harrison defeated Juma Tuerxun by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26 and 30-27) and earned three points

Jack May defeated Josh Copeland by TKO (referee stoppage) at 4:30 of the first round to earn six points

Their next event in June 21 in Chicago and can be seen on NBCSN and Facebook Live.
