it’s syrian independence day :]
there is one (1) character who knows the full* extent of syria’s trauma and it’s fucking. turkey . ?????? how did this happen
spreading my evil turkbaijan agenda...
the central treaty organisation, also known as the baghdad pact (headquarters were situated in ankara for most of its existence), also known as the middle east treaty organisation (britain was here too), was a
how i cope with the political climate of my country
back during the ottoman days the other balkaners would request to spend time at romania’s abode when they didn’t wanna deal with turkey for a while ☝️
half of me wants to play the contrarian to typical turkey hcs and make him a cat & the other half of me tells me that’s a silly idea
did any other clays care about syrias death/fall of the regime, like iran, for example?
iran has watched greater people fall, and probably those that he’d had more personal (not political) attachment to. he’s had a lot on his plate to deal with already by the time it happened and the list only seems to grow, so he has more important matters to attend to. i imagine if he actually sat down to process it he’d be relatively upset.
iraq is a bit in denial. she’d gone through the same song & dance not long after the fall of her ba’athist government, had spent months as a ghost-spirit-clay before finally being ‘resurrected’. she’s sure he’s gonna have the same deal, because they’ve always been so alike, the two of them. in the meantime, syria’s ghost spends most of his time around her. she’s easier to bear than the rest. he doesn’t have as much to answer for with her.
palestine is grieving, but when is she not? for her family, for her people, for clays long gone. she’s marked a grave with his name in what was once her — jericho. there used to be a lot more there, all people she’s known, lost to time. she would’ve put it where they once lived, had she gotten the chance, but it’s remarkably difficult to get out of the west bank as a palestinian and especially so as the nation itself. spirits like to stay about her, so she isn’t surprised when she sees him for the first time alongside them.
lebanon tries not to think about him in general, but sometimes she’s sure she sees something that looks like him in the corners of her vision — but when she turns to look, nothing’s there. on bad days, she can’t help but think she had something to do with it, indirectly, in the silent hours of the night.
others have varying reactions: cheering over land grabs (israel), glad for a nigh-client state (turkey), genuinely sad over an ally & friend dying so suddenly (russia), upset over the political situation of the nation post-fall (rojava), etc.
