Past Lives

There had been a time where Sooyoung had wanted to be exactly what her father had wanted from her. Top five in her year, if not the top student, popular without gaining too many friends, aloof enough to keep every one at a distance and still have them want more. And, if she didn’t seem to understand the same emotions that everyone else felt, she learned to mimic them early on. Looking back, it was through her school years that she had first sharpened her skills at putting on personalities that weren’t her own.
When she realized how worthless her father actually away, the persona fell away, leaving a girl who was still trying to understand exactly why she had been so different from the others. Joining a different group, she watched as her grades steadily lowered, still in the top of the class but obviously not where she had once been. Cigarettes replaced pencils between her fingers and time on the roof replaced time in class. Conferences were called and missed and still, Sooyoung, picked up her father from the bars each night.
Eventually, she started letting the men take her home, getting what she wanted from them and dropping them when they lost their value. When she was sent to the island, it was the beginning of her new life. One where she didn’t have to hide unless she wanted it. One where she could have control over her surroundings. And she thrived in it, ruling over her small kingdom Still, she was only human, and she did enjoy making her own meals when it suited her.
Which meant that she’d have to take the occasional trip to the grocers for supplies. So, with bag in hand, she strode back to her apartment, across the street from her club. Even on the days when the club wasn’t open (the monthly cleaning always meant a day off for her girls, and they never complained about that), Sooyoung dressed well. She had a brand to maintain after all. Her eyes drifted across the crowd, not picking up anything of note as she continued towards the her apartment.
