For the Halloween Ask
the prompt "Summoned a Demon"
Thank you Pheita! Here's a little something
Sasha scrunches his nose as the fog blows into his face. It smells distinctly of ash and rot and so, so familiar. It is not the first time since he drew the array that he thinks the whole action was a big bad mistake on his part; but every time he then remembers that there is no big choice to begin with.
There’s a pile of dirt on the ground of his attic, black and wet and full of squirming bugs and worms. It doesn’t make him retch, not anymore. A hand claws out of it.
“I should’ve known,” the cold voice says. Miranda looks more annoyed than furious, somehow that doesn’t make it better.
“I hoped for someone else as well,” he replies.
“I find myself lacking sympathy.”
Miranda scoffs as she gets out of the dirt, clasps the robe he had prepared and put it on. With a raised eyebrow, she inspects what’s left of the array to know the exact rules of her summoning. The more she stares, the more restless she becomes.
“You really did not mean to summon me?” she asks a bit disbelieving.
“I had no desire to meet you so quickly again, no. I figured the chances were quite low for it to be you, actually.”
“Past attachments have linked us together. Our divorce doesn’t change that. You should have known better.”
It’s true, he supposes. He can’t dwell on it for too long now anyway.
“I’m sorry for the trouble. I still need your help, whether you like it or not.”
When she turned back to him, there is a distant look on her face. Like she is still not entirely sure to trust him or not. He tries to stay clam under her gaze, even if it’s near impossible. It is too sharp, to close to gazes she had for him all those years in the past.
“Help you with what?” she finally asks, apparently having come to some sort of conclusion.
“They’re back,” he answers and no more words are needed. She freezes, despite the hellish temperatures in the attic, light horror dancing in her red eyes. It mixes with determination. With a mutual nod, they come to an agreement.
