I learned a couple of weeks ago that Love, Burns - Phil Sutton's full-time band now that Pale Lights has been retired - is set to release their 3rd full length album in May 29th via Spinout Nugget Records (UK), and Jigsaw Records (US). Currently, only one song is available, but the band has apparently also re-recorded "Dear Carol" which was released on 7" last year.

Sutton (Brooklyn, New York) is kind of a big deal. Did you know he is a librarian at the New York Public Library? It's kind of funny to think that for most people that IS what he is known for. But after a lifetime in the music industry, he can get some real indie heavyweights to work with him as evidenced by his band and guests on "Pavement Drawings": Kyle Forrester (Crystal Stilts), Hannes Muller (The BVs), Jo Roman, Alicia Hyman (Jeanines), Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor), Jed Smith (My Teenage Stride, Jeanines, Mick Trouble, Creative Writing).

Bonus throw in. Thanks to Ned Norland, I was also listening to The Love Variants "Life of Riley" cassette as I was writing this. I was loving it and thinking of Phil's voice a little bit. Give it a listen if you're so moved.

My love for the music of Phil Sutton has been well documented here over the years whether with The Pale Lights, The Soft City, or Love, Burns. Now that The Pale Lights has gone on permanent hiatus, we are left with Love, Burns as the main vehicle for Sutton's music.

"Dear Carol/Drawn Together" is the first single since Love, Burns has taken over pole position of Sutton's bands. He is joined by Kyle Forrester (Crystal Stilts), Hannes Müller (The BV's) and Rachel Evans (Comet Gain).

This is being released by UK label Spinout Nuggets although Sutton has about 20 copies on his own Love, Burns (Brooklyn, New York) Bandcamp page for sale.

Gary Olson. He's been a part of many of my favorite bands - mostly as a producer (he's always working with Phil Sutton). Sometimes I forget that his band, The Ladybug Transistor (Brooklyn, New York) was magical in its own right.

"The Ablemarle Sound" is being reissued by Happy Happy Birthday To Me (HHBTM Records) with bonus tracks. I hear so many great things in this record: The Kinks, The Four Seasons ("The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette), or The Heavy Blinkers come immediately to mind. This album almost sounds Scottish - I just can't help but think of later era Pastels or BMX Bandits when I hear the lush arrangements.

Members of the band went on to form other great bands such as The Essex Green and The Garment District.

Love Burns- "Dear Carol" single (Spinout Nuggets)

NYC's Phil Sutton (transplanted Brit) isn't going away. Nope…and it's not like we want him to, but just in case you thought NYC was gonna swallow this guy whole and have him take up… I dunno, maybe bowling. Nope, not gonna happen.

After stints in Comet Gain, Velocette, The Soft City, Pale Lights, and a few others, Sutton has settled into his middle-aged solo project. Of course he gets some help from a few of NYC's finest, like Kyle Forester and is recorded by Gary Olson at, where else, Marlborough Farms. This time he's joined by Comet Gain's Rachel Evans, and these two make quite a pair with their lovely melding of their vocals.

Both cuts, "Dear Carol" and "Drawn Together," are worth your time. It's lovely, melodic pop music, pure and simple, and it's happening in real time. You need to be on this.

Spinout Nuggets is a record label providing the music you didn't know you liked.

Following up on The Ladybug Transistor post was easy. Frequent Gary Olson collaborator, Phil Sutton, is releasing "another "Blue" by Love, Burns (Queens, New York). This band sound remarkably like Pale Lights, but the lineup is sort of an all-star one: Kyle Forrester (Crystal Stilts), Hampus Öhman-Frölund (drummed with many including Jens Lekman) and the aforementioned Gary Olson.

There have been many Love, Burns/Pale Lights posts over the years but I will repeat my RIYL: Felt, Lloyd Cole, Edwyn Collins, and many many more.

This is being co-released by Kleine Untergrund Schallplatte (KUS) and Jigsaw Records.

Two bits of great news. First, the obvious - we are getting a new Pale Lights LP. This LP compiles songs from singles, EPs and digital only releases. The lead single is one of my favorite Pale Lights' songs, "You and I" (listen to that bass).

Other good news? Pale Lights is releasing a new album and so is Love, Burns. Philip Sutton (New York) is starting strong in 2024.

I probably don't need to run through the Pale Lights list of touchstones, but I will anyway: Lloyd Cole, The Bats and Felt have all been previous mentions. But, as this is released on Jigsaw Records, they added their own - Weather Prophets and Razorcuts.

Phil Sutton has made my life better in numerous ways: Comet Gain, Pale Lights and now Love, Burns. Pale Lights and Love, Burns are vehicles for his indie pop genius. Do a search on this blog and you'll see how much I've enjoyed his work over the past decade.

Phil's work is definitely informed by his work with Gary Olson, but also his clear love of jangle pop: The Bats, Lloyd Cole and The Byrds. I'm being repetitive from previous posts...but it all deserves mentioning.

Austin Town Hall is releasing "It Should Have Been Tomorrow" on cassette. It looks like Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten might be releasing a LP, and Jigsaw Records might be releasing the CD.

The new 7″ from Love, Burns was put up a few days ago and is already sold out, but I still have to post about it. Phil Sutton’s (Queens, New York) work with Comet Gain and later Pale Lights has always put a smile on my face. This release is no different.

Sutton has released work for Slumberland Records and Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten. This is released on his own Calico Cat Records.

There’s no denying The Byrds jangle or the Lloyd Cole vocals. Felt and The Spires also come to mind when I listen to Sutton’s work.
