Justin Tyner: Light As Memory: Recollections Through Stained Glass
Philadelphia artist Justin Tyner thoughtfully mixes salvaged and repurposed glass to manipulate the effects of light. He uses the bottoms of discarded bottles and fallen stained glass from abandoned churches to create new psychedelic works. Pieced together poems, kaleidoscopic patterns, and geometric forms make up his works of art, all of which filter light to create limitless color combinations. Tyner’s stained glass pieces pay tribute to the history behind the materials he uses and express his own personal feelings and memories.
Justin Tyner’s work has been featured in various exhibitions, including at the Rincliffe Gallery at Drexel University, the American Glass Guild Annual Conference, the National Liberty Museum, and the Philadelphia International Airport. Tyner will soon be traveling to France for a stained glass artist residency, where he will live in a 16th century chateau in Champagne-Ardenne and discover new techniques of working with glass.
“More than any other medium, stained glass connects us to the cosmos by filtering the sun and manipulating its light to significantly impact the viewer. There is magic in glass that allows the viewer to channel the light and the poetry I am sharing through my work.”
