The Letter to Santa Claus

December 7, 1903

The US Congress Santa reads President Roosevelt's Message to Congress.

The letter reads "Dear Santa Claus. Please bring a gun for me an Philander Knox - We're going after bribery an corruption an will need some appropriation powder pretty bad. Yours Teddy Roosevelt.”

Congress has a sack full of money labelled Appropriations on his back. He also has donkey and elephant toys, and a drum labelled Campaign Thunder.

Roosevelt would deliver his Message to Congress that night.

The Skilful Angler

April 10th, 1903

Philander Knox has caught the octopus of the R.R. Merger with the fishing pole of U.S. Law, and aims to snag it with the Hook of the Supreme Court.

In the complete version, a caption reads “He Succeeds in landing a Big One.”

Philander Knox was the Attorney General, and was planning on appealing a case to the supreme court in regards to a merger between two major railroads.

House Cleaning Time

April 18, 1903

The Secretary of Commerce, George Cortelyou, as a maid washes the floors of the Trusts' house with Knox Trust Soap. He is labelled Dept. of Commerce. Meanwhile, the Trusts rest outside. A sign on the wall reads "Cleanliness is Next to Godliness." 

The caption reads "A Little Disagreeable for the Gentleman Just Now, but It Will Be Good for Him in the Long Run." 

The recently created Department of Commerce and Labor was charged with investigating the Trusts and ensuring they did not practice illegal activity. Philander Knox was the Attorney General

Something Doing

January 7, 1903

George Hoar and Charles Littlefield, of the Administration School, cut an Anti-Trust Legislation switch for Philander Knox to use on the Trusts.

Hoar and Littlefield were two of the chief proponents of Anti-trust legislation, and Knox was Attorney General.

Keep it Up

August 9, 1902

In a boxing ring, Uncle Sam encourages Philander C. Knox to beat Trusts. 

The caption reads “Uncle Sam - ‘That's what Knox!’”

Knox, the Attorney General, was leading the United States legal department investigating the Trusts, and had been involved in a fistfight with a man who insulted his family. The man was a millionaire, and according to contemporary papers, may have been motivated by Knox’s investigations of the Trusts.

The Cabinet Preserves

February 15, 1909

Congress moves the Secretary of State jam jar from the $12,000 per year shelf to the $8,000 per year shelf, putting it in reach of Philander Knox, who can climb up the chair of Taft Appointment.

The caption reads "Congress (placing Sec. of State Jar on lower shelf) - There, I guess Philander can reach it now."

Due to constitutional reasons, (the Ineligibility clause), Knox had been ineligible for the post at its higher pay grade, and so Congress reduced the salary to allow him to take it.

Child Philander Knox seaches through Taft's Cabinet for Christmas presents, and finds the book "State Portfolio for Philander Knox". Taft looks in from the doorway

The caption reads 'Philander Gets Into the Cabinet Before Christmas'

As reported in the December 19 Minneapolis Tribune, Pennsylvania Senator and former Attorney General Philander C. Knox was announced as Taft's Secretary of State before Christmas of 1908, shortly after Taft's election to the White House.

Willie Taft's Getting a Bite

June 4, 1908

Taft is accompanied by Knox, Fairbanks, Hughes, Cannon, and La Follette while fishing for the Republican Presidential Nomination.

The caption reads "The other boys are all anxious to help him catch the big one."

All of them were candidates for the nomination, but Taft was the clear favorite.
