Seven candidates are in the running for a byelection to replace former Quebec Liberal leader Philippe Couillard in the provincial riding of Roberval.
Seven candidates are in the running for a byelection to replace former Quebec Liberal leader Philippe Couillard in the provincial riding of Roberval.
The riding has been vacant since Couillard quit politics days after losing October’s provincial election.
Elections Quebec says following a Saturday deadline, seven parties have put up a candidate seeking to replace the former premier when voters in the riding go to the polls on Dec. 10.
Couillard garnered 42 per cent of the votes cast on Oct. 1, easily winning the riding in the Saguenay region.
The Parti Québécois, Québec solidaire, the Conservative Party and Citoyens au pouvoir are all running the same candidates that ran against Couillard. The Liberals are running Chambord city councillor William Laroche. The Coalition Avenir Québec has selected former Roberval city councillor Nancy Guillemette. The Green Party is running leader Alex Tyrrell.

THE HAPPINESS OF THE COWBOY IN 2018 By Bernard Bujold - Several friends ask me if I am a man destroyed following the election of François Legault whereas I had rather projected a victory of Philippe Couillard? Personally, I admit, I never considered that Legault should be elected Prime Minister. This can probably explain the failure in my projection that was not objective. Yet I was no more a fan of Philippe Couillard and I did not vote for him any more than for Manon Massé. In my opinion, the candidate who was the most developed in terms of his political ideas was Jean-François Lisée. And since the economy is healthy, I saw no reason to change government. It seems that voters do not vote on the ideas or the intellectual side of the program... But we must however accept the choice of the majority. I do not have to share it or love it, but you have to accept it. In 2016, I had successfully projected Donald Trump's election! But it was not Trump's policies that convinced me of his victory because I am not an American, but the character he represented, in his draw and style, a winner against the self-righteous. I have always had a lot of admiration for Donald Trump since the 1980s, and I was convinced that his fighter and winner personality was going to give him the win in 2016. I was right in my projection but it was more a confidence and a judgment to Donald than an in-depth analysis of the election. In the Quebec election, I did not have any admiration for any of the candidate and I projected on the programs. That was my mistake. Always follow your feeling instead of your head. I am not defeated by the victory of François Legault and I am a happy man! For those who would worry about my "little" grief to the soul with regard to the victory of Legault, I will remember you that I have "the immeasurable" joy and happiness of going to bed every night, and of get up every morning since 2016, thinking that President Donald exists in my "era" of life... The happiness of a soul, just like his misfortune, is always a question of very personal thoughts. In reality, many of our happiness and our misfortunes are only passing anecdotes in the history of humanity and without any real importance to make the earth turn. However, we must be happy because life is too short to be unhappy. So if you have to cling to anecdotes to be happy, let's love the anecdotes! LE BONHEUR DU COWBOY EN 2018 Par Bernard Bujold - Plusieurs amis me demandent si je suis un homme défait suite à l'élection de François Legault alors que j'avais plutôt projeté une victoire de Philippe Couillard? Personnellement, je l’avoue, je n'ai jamais considéré que Legault devait être élu Premier ministre. Cela peut probablement expliquer l’échec dans ma projection qui n'était pas objective. Pourtant je n'étais pas plus un fan de Philippe Couillard et je n'ai pas voté pour lui pas plus que pour Manon Massé. Selon moi, le candidat qui était le plus développé sur le plan de ses idées politiques était Jean-François Lisée. Et comme l'économie est bien portante, je ne voyais pas de raison de changer de gouvernement. Il semble bien que les électeurs ne votent pas sur les idées ni sur le côté intellectuel du programme... Mais il faut cependant accepter le choix de la majorité. Je ne suis pas obligé de le partager, ni de l’aimer, mais il faut l’accepter. En 2016, j'avais projeté avec succès l'élection de Donald Trump! Mais ce n'étaient pas les politiques de Trump qui m'avaient convaincu de sa victoire car je ne suis pas Américain, mais le personnage qu'il représentait, dans sa dégaine et son style, un gagnant contre les bien-pensants. J'ai toujours eu beaucoup d'admiration pour Donald Trump, et ce depuis les années 1980, et j'étais convaincu que sa personnalité de bagarreur et de gagnant allait lui procurer la victoire en 2016. J'ai eu raison dans ma projection mais c'était plus une confiance et un jugement envers Donald qu'une analyse en profondeur de l'élection. Lors de l'élection du Québec, je n'avais aucune admiration pour aucun des candidats et j'ai projeté sur les programmes. C'était mon erreur. Suivez toujours vos sentiments au lieu de votre tête. Je ne suis nullement défait par la victoire de François Legault et je suis toujours un homme heureux! Pour ceux qui s'inquiéteraient de ma "petite" peine à l’âme à l’égard de la victoire de Legault, je vous rappellerai que j’ai "l’incommensurable" joie et bonheur de me coucher chaque soir, et de me lever chaque matin depuis 2016, en pensant que le President Donald existe dans mon «époque» de vie... Le bonheur d’un être, tout comme son malheur, est toujours une question de pensées bien personnelles. Dans la réalité, plusieurs de nos bonheurs et de nos malheurs ne sont que des anecdotes passagères dans l'histoire de l'humanité et sans réelle importance pour faire tourner la terre. Il faut cependant être heureux car la vie est trop courte pour être malheureuse. Alors s’il faut s’accrocher à des anecdotes pour être heureux, aimons les anecdotes! ÉLECTIONS QUÉBEC 2018, 1er octobre Par Bernard Bujold- " L’important est d’aller voter. Pour le reste, que le meilleur gagne!" Le résultat des élections Québec 2018 fait penser à une compétition sportive quand un cheval débutant et de mauvaise mine gagne contre d’autres chevaux plus élégants. Pour moi la politique m’a toujours fait penser à une course de chevaux. Mais comme avec les chevaux, c’est la tension et l’énergie durant la course qui sont captivantes. La course politique québécoise est terminée et le cheval gagnant va se promener avec la couronne de fleurs et c’est la fin de l’histoire. On perd tous un jour. Il faut profiter de nos victoires dans le moment présent et éviter de revivre nos défaites du passé. Quand notre cheval a perdu, mieux vaut jeter les coupons et aller se coucher. Demain est un autre jour! Il y avait en tout 940 candidats et 125 ont gagné! Pour les perdants, il faut faire comme avec les courses de chevaux et jeter les coupons perdants et se trouver un autre jeu... La vie est un jeu qu’il faut jouer avec passion mais aussi, et surtout, avec détachement. La politique est le pire emploi qui soit parmi tous car tous les gens dans la rue se considèrent ton patron et ils veulent des miracles! Il faut être un optimiste aveugle, ou naif, pour croire que l’on va changer le monde parce que l’on est en politique. S’il y a une conclusion c’est que l’avenir est imprévisible. Il peut être merveilleux ou catastrophe. Voilà pourquoi il est préférable, sinon essentiel, de profiter pleinement du moment présent! Bon automne 2018 à tous et toutes, politiciens et citoyens! The result of the Quebec 2018 elections is reminiscent of a sporting competition when a novice and bad-looking horse wins against other more elegant horses. For me politics has always reminded me of a horse race. But as with horses, it's the tension and energy during the race that are captivating. The Quebec political race is over and the winning horse is going for a walk with the wreath and that's the end of the story. We all lose a day. We must take advantage of our victories in the actual moment and avoid reliving our defeats of the past. When our horse has lost, it is better to throw the coupons and go to bed. Tomorrow is another day! There were in all 940 candidates and 125 won! For the losers, it is necessary to do as with the horse races and discard the losers coupons and to find another game ... The life is a game which it is necessary to play with passion but also, and especially, with detachment. Politics is the worst job of all because all the people in the street consider themselves your boss and they want miracles! One must be blind optimistic, or naive, to believe that one will change the world because one is in politics. If there is one conclusion it is that the future is unpredictable. It can be wonderful or disaster. That's why it's better, if not essential, to take full advantage of the now moment! Happy autumn 2018 to all, politicians and citizens!
