365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #297: Voulez-vous danser avec moi? (aka Come Dance with Me!) (1959) - dir. Michel Boisrond

Voulez-vous danser avec moi?, known in the US as Come Dance with Me!, is possibly my favorite of the many Brigitte Bardot films I have watched recently. It is a delightful comedy/murder mystery, overflowing with excitement and sensuality. BB plays Virginie Dandieu, a young woman who helps her husband, Hervé (Henri Vidal), solve the homicide of Anita Flores (Dawn Addams), a gorgeous dance instructor who had been blackmailing him over some scandalous photos (it’s a long story; see the film to find out why). Virginie goes undercover by getting a job at Anita’s dance studio, a self-imposed assignment that brings Virginie into contact with many colorful characters, including a friendly police inspector, a suspicious barman and a male dance teacher who moonlights as a cabaret singer.

Come Dance with Me! is full of excellent performances, including supporting appearances by Philippe Nicaud, Noël Roquevert, Paul Frankeur, Darío Moreno, Georges Descrières, the one and only Serge Gainsbourg (as an accomplice in the blackmail scheme), Maria Pacôme, Pascal Mazzotti and Magdeleine Bérubet. There is also beautiful Eastmancolor cinematography by Robert Lefebvre and numerous enchanting costumes designed by Rosine Delamare. Viewers may also be intrigued by a subplot involving gay characters and a section of the film that takes place in a nightclub where men perform in full drag, surely an unusual sight in a mainstream film (even a European one) made in 1959.

The film also served as a nice introduction to Henri Vidal for me. He was one of French cinema’s handsomest leading men, married to the legendary actress Michèle Morgan. Tragically, Vidal died of a heart attack at age 40, shortly before Come Dance with Me!’s release. With every film I watch, I look not only to be entertained but also to enrich my understanding of film history, familiarizing myself with performers from both the present and the past.
