December PQB- Supporting Black and Pink!

hey philly queers! our December brunch is right around the corner: Sunday 12/13, from 1-4pm this month we are repeating last December's brunch and making holiday cards for queer and trans incarcerated people through Black and Pink (http://www.blackandpink.org), an awesome organization working to build solidarity and connections between LGBTQ incarcerated folks and "free world" allies. last year we had so much fun and made TONS of beautiful cards-- come join us and help give our incarcerated queer and trans family members some love and warmth this holiday season. Come support QDEP on 11/15! 🌈🌈🌈

Hey philly queers!! the next Philly Queer Brunch will be on November 15 from 1-4 at 2319 St Albans St, supporting the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project (QDEP, queerdep), an awesome NYC-based organization that provides a broad range of social services and support to queer individuals and families coming out of immigration detention (http://www.qdep.org). This month we will not be making zines; instead we will be making holiday cards for folks currently in detention.

As always, we suggest that you bring a dish to share and $10-15 to donate to this month’s organization– 100% of money raised will be going to QDEP. If you can’t bring one or either of those things, we still want to see you! Come and bring your queer holiday spirit!

Also as always, this event is open to everyone!! We center the experiences of queer & trans women & nonbinary folks, but all are always welcome. *Especially* if you don’t know anyone! PQB is about making friends & building community.

🚨URGENT OCTOBER BRUNCH UPDATE!!!!🚨

Due to an unforeseen logistical issue, we are CHANGING THE LOCATION of this Sunday's (aka TOMORROW'S) brunch!! It will now be in west philly, at 419 S 44th St, apt 2 (corner of 44th and Osage). Thank u so much to @sketchyblondes for being willing to host on such short notice!! Brunch will still have delicious food, wonderful queers, zine-making etc, and we hope to see you there! 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈

On the morning my mom died, I came home from the hospital with my dad and my grandparents and my aunt and my uncle. I sat on the couch, eating a yogurt, becoming more and more agitated, feeling like the only thing that might possibly help would be if I could crawl out of my own skin. The only thing anyone could think to do with me was send me to school, for Student Leader Training, which had been the day’s original plan — the one written in on the calendar my mom kept, before August 28th became the Day She Died. I sat there, in the training, wide-eyed, staring into space. The facts of the day marched back and forth in my brain. It seemed impossible that I still seemed to exist, despite the fact that the thing I had dreaded most my entire life had finally happened. I spent the next few years on a righteous search for meaning and purpose, literally traveling to the other side of the world to try and convince myself that I could transform the gaping hole in my life into something else. This was reinforced by the books I read, which were primarily tropes of transformation by straight white women whose great losses were usually men who had broken their hearts. I’m still young, I know, but I was so young, then. Eighteen. Trying to do things on my own. Certain I could. I thought I could force myself into some sort of moment of self-acceptance and actualization. By the time I got to college, I had disengaged — I pushed my grief deep inside myself somewhere. I thought I had moved on to other things. I was wrong.

Brunch 9/13 for Autostraddle!

Come one, come all, and bring your friends along for a potluck brunch fundraiser to support AUTOSTRADDLE.COM!! Autostraddle is many things to many people: a community, a source of news (political, pop cultural, and always gay), an aesthetic inspiration, an outlet for thoughtful essay-writing, and a delightful Google Chrome homepage, among others. Autostraddle is the groundbreaking and world-making website that gives us all the best in "News, Entertainment, Opinion, Community and Girl-on-Girl Culture," providing advice, support, and information to millions of queer, trans & cis ladyfolk and non-binary folk every month. 100% of the money donated will go towards supporting the March, and 100% of the food contributed will go towards us being happy and very full. WHAT IS THE EVENT? Philly Queer Brunch is a monthly queer potluck fundraiser supporting a different queer, trans, and otherwise justice-oriented organization or project each month. This month, we're raising money for Autostraddle! We'll enjoy our food and each other's company, and chat about building sustainable queer communities online and in person, especially among queer and trans women. Inspired by Autostraddle's "Interview with My Queer BFF" series, we'll also be making a ZINE about our QUEER FRIENDSHIPS. ♥ WHAT SHOULD I BRING? Since it's a potluck, we're encouraging everyone to bring a dish or drink to share AND $10 to donate. In exchange, you'll get all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink brunch and great company! Please also note: donations of ANY size are extremely welcome. If $10 isn't feasible for you right now, we would still love to have you join us! And if you're able to give more, the March could use your support. WHO'S INVITED? EVERYONE is welcome at PQB!
