Chibnall not knowing about Kate in Downtime and coincidentally naming the Brig’s daughter Kate in the new series is pretty wild what are the odds of that? Or did I miss something
Certainly seems odd and coincidental. Downtime is pretty niche, though, and the characterisations are pretty different. I could see it going either way or even a bit of both, perhaps him creating a character and then naming as tribute after learning about it or something. Certainly I’m pretty sure Big Finish has merged the two Kates, if nothing else, and I recall her mentioning the kid from Downtime in an audio. So at this point, any distinction is pure technicality, but it was an interesting one to mention, I thought.
All I can find on the subject is Shannon Sullivan mentioning that “Chibnall wished to pay tribute to Courtney -- who had passed away in February -- by introducing the Brigadier's daughter, Kate as the new leader of UNIT. As a twist, Kate Stewart would not be a soldier like her father, but rather the Head of Scientific Research. Effectively, then, she would inherit the roles of both the Brigadier and the Doctor within UNIT. Coincidentally, Doctor Who spin-off media had already introduced a daughter named Kate for the Brigadier (created by Marc Platt for the video Downtime), but Chibnall was unaware of this character.”
They cite Doctor Who Magazine Special Edition #33, Spring 2013, “The Power Of Three” by Andrew Pixley, Panini UK Ltd. So if anyone has that, check it out, I guess. It’d be fascinating either way.
