PJP MIXTAPES: The late piano master Raymond A. King was a musician’s musician, who played in the avant-garde tradition, but had a deep love of Swing and Bebop music. A Philadelphia-bred jazz pianist and self-taught visual artist, King also worked and studied with Los Angeles Jazz legend, Horace Tapscott and enjoyed a long time collaboration with saxophonist Sabir Mateen. As part of our @makemusicphilly events, King performed a moving solo piano extravaganza @jacobsmusiccompany in Philadelphia in June of 2013. It explored the overlooked history of the post-Civil War, Reconstruction era and in particular, he delved into the betrayed promise of the Freedman's Bureau. PJP MIXTAPES: During the summer of 2019, vocalist Bethlehem, created magic with violinist Jack Drummond, bassist Richard Hill, and drummer Malik Henry. They created a musical experience around the theme of a long walk home. The subtext was that this particular walk happened at Ibo Landing: the historic site where it is believed that an entire shipload of Africans sold into slavery, turned toward the ocean and walked into the waters taking their own lives instead of becoming slaves in America.
