The quilt!!! The Good Luck quilt !!!! just there on instagram with 60 likes on it!!!!!!!!! oh man i was looking SO HARD. i've started to do a guide to all the good luck symbols that were on it but my quest is basically over!! The edges of it aren't clear, but this is basically everything we DON'T see in the film! oh man, I feel lightheaded.

My initial, pre-this-post thoughts

I drew @sharkfiinn's eridian oc Prism for artfight <3!!! What if Erid made grace a clear part of the space elevator so he could look at the real stars? What if Prism brought up how they wish Moonbow could have been brought back to Erid, at least for a proper funeral? So, Grace sets up a telescope from the Hail Mary so Prism can 'see' where Moonbow is laid to rest.

Since the Blip A would be orbiting somewhere around Tau Ceti, I added it in its constellation Cetus 'the whale'. But the constellation would look different on Erid so I flipped it. Shout out to THIS Project Hail Mary Stellar navigation chart that helped my brain.

I drew a bunch of Sashiko patterns on Graces clothes. I like to think he has a preference to clothes from Earth over ones made on Erid, so the time is taken to repair rather than replace. And it adds a fun texture that the eridians can perceive. And I popped in the aroace flag colors bc why not.

I spent the last 3 days mapping and remapping The Quilt and I think I finally got pretty darn close to the final thing:

This is after combining what we've seen from both draperemporium's instagram posts + the movie.

Some segments are still not very clear (i.e. the couple long strips that changed between what we've seen on the ground mocup had and the end piece:

But that's what I got so far.

To figure out the measurements, I started with this photo from draperemporium's post with the unfinished quilt:

GOD BLESS that stray print-out. I plugged it into my super advanced Paint 3D and estimated the original quilt to be around 6 print outs wide and approx. 4 print outs tall (tall side), giving us a 6:4 ratio.

Considering draperemporium seems to be based in the UK and/or Spain, the standard A4 page would be 210 x 297 mm. After some calculations worth my own Andy Weir book (why did I start by making it in a cross stitch pattern making app??), I'm estimating the size of the original to be around 180 x 120 cm (rounding up a bit) (not including borders).

With that out of the way, I briefly blacked out and when I came back to I decided to do it all in inches. Sorry cm lovers.

6:4 ratio Possible sizes: 60 x 40 90 x 60 120 x 80 ... and more For my personal use (I WILL make this quilt, it's my life mission now), because I want the quilt to be a bit on the larger side, I decided to go with the sweet middle of 90:60 and after some fidding around got the below measurements for each segment of the quilt (all in inches):

And there you have it! The end product for the above will be 90 x 60 inches + border. For a 60 x 40 you'd have to divide all measurements by 1.5 and slightly round some up/down.

I might not be entirely faithful to the original but I think it's a rather good start. Feel free to use it for your own project!

Making the project hail mary quilt part 1

Since I've decided to do this, I'm gonna document my progress on here, so if I ever loose motivation, maybe someone here will tell me to keep going, or someone with more knowledge has tips.

Alright, Step 1. Be stupid enough to do this.

Step 2. Find reference material.

As far as I can tell, these are all original quilt pictures. You can see that there was an earlier version, and some patches have changed in the final version, so I am mostly using the third picture as a reference.

There were a few things not 100% correct (no hate to the person who did it), so I crossreferenced and came up with a version that should be the closest to the og.

I'll also be using this post as a reference. (Thanks to @couldbeglorious )

Yeah, I know, but in order to sew it, you'll need to know the size of the patches.

my headcanon is for the quilt in the phm movie is that eva went back to grace’s class and asked each of them to color in a square, then she commissioned someone to make the quilt for grace with the designs of the kids as the squares yk

new headcanon dropping: the quilt in the movie is actually a collaborative effort of the people working on the project

a means of providing a bit of love and familiarity and home with the astronauts on the trip

each image being picked/designed by someone different, each with its own story
