Just watched Project Hail Mary, bawled my eyes out, cried so much my eyes burned and i had to shut em for a good second

My cry count is 9 different times, about 5 times sobbing and about 4 times tears but not quite sobbing

Anyway, fantastic movie, 1000000/10 would totally recommend, kinda fell in love with Ryan Gosling for a minute but thats not the point

Project Hail Mary was not my favorite movie walking out of the theater. I walked out and thought yeah that was good probably won’t see it again. Then it showed up in my tumblr and I was like you know what this is funny and blah blah blah. I interacted with the fandom more but even then it wasn’t my favorite. One night I got on TikTok and just fucking scrolled Ryland edits a for like two hours. Two days later I saw it again and at that point I’d sat on it and realized how fucking good it was, how in love with the characters I was, and how much it made me feel. After the second watch it’s my favorite movie. No movie has captured my attention for this long after seeing it, no movie has made me cry in a theater before this one, and no movie has made me genuinely cry just thinking back on it and hearing new details I didn’t notice. Project Hail Mary is my favorite movie, not because of the hot nerdy scientist (though that helped), not because of the fandom (though that also helped), but because of how much it makes me feel. I hate crying, it’s the worst thing in the world for me. But when I cry about Project Hail Mary it doesn’t feel bad, I don’t feel weak or too sensitive, I feel okay with being emotional because damn it that movie deserves for tears to be shed over it.

Listen, im happy for yall who were very happy with the project hail mary movie, but i need to put my thoughts out:

Spoiler warning

I hate what they did with Stratt. They defanged her. They made her a tragic sad lady, and gave her what felt to me like the equivalent of a "taking the nerdy girls glasses off" moment with the karaoke scene.

Its just so counter to everything that made her distinct and iconic in the book.

Stratt is an unrepentant, unapolagetic bitch in order to accomplish her goals. She prioritizes the future of humanity above all else and she doesnt care who hates her because of her methods, if itll make them comply faster. She also is admittedly on little bit of an ego trip with the unlimited authority thing, and book Grace calls her out for it at various points. Shes also funny, because shes blunt and rude and slightly smug.

I saw someone say they humanized her in the movie, made her more empathetic and likeable, and i get what they mean but also the basis of that framing bothers me.

Stratt is human, an interesting, sharp edged human with very thick walls. She doesnt cry, and she doesnt do heart to hearts, because thats not her. The impassioned speech she gives to Grace when hes held hostage, in their final conversation is the most she ever bares her heart, the most we ever see the facade crack, and it is compelling. It is deeply human.

Idk i think its clear they felt a woman had to be "likeable" in order to be the third main character, and in order to accomplish that they stripped of her of basically everything that made her distinct and fun

"Go to hell" "Oh, I will" Stratt you will always be iconic to me, i wont forget what a bitch you were

Not even joking, everything felt really weighted in my chest ever since Grace first uncovered one of the dead people on the ship just after waking. And that was NOT EVEN THREE WHOLE MINUTES IN 😭😭😭

I think it really hit me in the feels because for— for the longest time, I've felt really secluded/isolated from people, despite being around people. I've always had the thought of "are we alone?" when I think about space, which is why Elio made me sob as well. (Highly recommend that movie GUH)

I feel like it all was just so— so heavy, and I didn't really know what to do with myself, so I got really invested really quick

But uh, I really really liked it.

I remember reading a tk fic last night of Rocky and Grace, (the one where grace misses home and misses his students, I think. But it might be a different one) and it mentioned that Grace's last memory of human contact back home was being pinned to the grass as he screamed. I now know what that means, and that's horrible :[

But basically, the whole movie, I was on either the verge of tears, or deadarse sobbing. But I really liked Grace's humor hehe

Some random things I wrote down because they stuck to me hehe ↓

Aaaanyway, whenever he left Rocky I was like WHATAFAQ ARE YOU DOING??? And I was rooting for him to go back (through an immense amount of tears smhhhh) and got so excited when Rocky showed back up :]

I dunno, the movie really resonated with me and I wanna say THANK YOU TO THE PERSON WHO SENT THE LINK!!! X3 <33

It was a great movie and I'll 100% rewatch it :D

And to the people wondering, yes, Grace is such a lee to me :3c

i watched project hail mary

late to the party, yes, but i actually really enjoyed it! it was a pretty good adaptation imo because it really does try to stick to the spirit of the book and i commend them for it. and as a movie on its own if you haven't read the book i'd say it's remarkably solid

some of my thoughts:

additions- most of the additions i was pretty happy with, they helped to add elements to the movie that were maybe harder to translate in story. i really liked the beach at the end! the karaoke scene was a bit strange for me but it didn't yank me out of the movie so i'll let it slide

i will say i wasn't 100% onboard with the scene of stratt watching back the logs since i did personally prefer rocky giving the news. but you know i appreciated that they showed the climate getting colder.

i'm genuinely impressed at how they managed to adapt the book without the ryland grace inner monologue show. that was impressive. the video logs were a pretty smart workaround for times when they needed what the ryland grace monologue show could provide

the way the subtitling works when grace is on erid is great, i was so delighted when they didn't bother with rocky's little english voice at all it's such a good homage to the whole 'we're 100% fluent now.' part of the book.

grace saving the computer and the adrian mention were nice too! i like the little clear suit for rocky i kinda see it as a nice little 'this is what we can do now that we're back and have all the access'

a little sad they cut the 'it took you this long to think about poking it with a stick?' line from the book but it's okay. there were still very good moments.

but yes! overall it was a good movie, good watch, idk if i'd have gone to watch it again in cinemas but i'd recommend it to my friends for a late night movie session at someone's place so i'd say that's a win. good job project hail mary.

also, just saying, the fact that they named ryland grace the way they did is amazing. hail mary, full of grace indeed.

I finally watched the phm movie and I loved it. It's like a fanfic of the book. The book is a tragedy and the film turned it into a happy ending while sticking to the original plot. Spoilers.

Although it also jumped over my favorite part Grace searching for Rocky in the dark. But I can understand its for the timing and the flow. It actually also just happens to removed parts I don't like in the book. Doing high school science to find out your in space personally I think it's cringe but I get the book is trying to introduce backstory and his character. Making chains in the hall inside of building something outside and make it retractable instead of pulling it by hand. Biologist feeling disgusted by very normal Alian biology that is also the same as a lot of earth life.

Tons of little missing scenes added, they get to hug (twice), enjoy "earth" through the big screen, wear party hats made by Grace, get all the cute outfits. And of course, the film it self. The amount of film language packed in from start to end. The lighting, the camera movements, the sound, the music, the shot angel, the composition, the colours, the fox, the instant ramen, the sea. It's the best retelling in film language. It is all done in a very classic and very obvious way like its speaking in the most easily clearly understandable way. Like how Grace and Rocky communicate. I found that kinda beautiful.

The Stratt as love interest is a bit weird. But I get it it's necessary for it to be classic style. But then again the Rainbows. I know rainbow symbolise hope. But it appeared when he remembered he was captured and forced to go on the mission. Forced to be brave I think that is what that Rainbow symbolize. Being forced to go on the journey forced to be brave but then getting to meet his best friend and see beautiful things he would never see otherwise. That sound familiar to me. Maybe I'm over thinking this but I love to interpret it this way. And he didn't go home at the end of the journey that's also queer if you ask me.
