My First Banh Mi in 68 Days

Most of you are wondering how it is humanly possible to go 68 days without eating a banh mi. To you I say, there are people out there who have never had a banh mi. It is a travesty. 

Hi, my name is WeEatLunch and I would like to write to you about something that you should probably invest in immediately for the future of our universe relative to me. For just $5000 dollars a day, I could eat 1,000 banh mi's from Pho Hut.

If there was a cheaper place that sold banh mi's in Glendale, I could probably eat even more. They would probably be even more delicious and their bread fresher. Sure, Pho Hut hits the spot in an empty heart-stomach of a voidless banh mi eater, but think about it.

Have you thought about it? Now, think about it some more.

Sometimes you get lost in thought.

Sometimes you need to eat banh mi.

Today, mine was beef.

Chicken Banh Mi

Yesterday's lunch:

Chicken banh mi at Pho Hut? What? They are really branching out. Beef and pork, a thing of the past. Pho Hut has entered a whole new game, poultry.

Sometimes Pho Hut banh mi's are very good, most times fine. Today, was closer to very good. The chicken was covered in some kind of not-quite-teriyaki sauce. It was sweet and had the same color and stickiness as teriyaki sauce, but it didn't taste quite like teriyaki. The chicken was tender, but without the sauce, not very well seasoned. 

The bread was fresher than most days I go over to Pho Hut. Whoever prepared the sandwich piled on a good amount of pickled veggies. The bread and the veggies are what tipped the sandwich closer to very good. Definitely not the chicken, because...

I think Pho Hut's beef and pork are superior to the chicken. Of coures, I tend to find almost all chicken boring unless it has been deep fried or is covered in gravy.

Pho Today, Doner Yesterday

I went to Pho Hut with a gang of coworkers. Everybody had pho and I went with their number 7, which is steak and well-done brisket.

Their meat isn't the best, but their broth is wonderful. I don't think I will get the brisket next time I go to Pho Hut. It's unseasoned and doesn't really make friends with the other flavors of the pho.

As you can see in the picture above, I added a ton of chili. I like it spicy. I want my nose running by the time I get out of there. I didn't quite make it that spicy this time around, but I added enough heat to give my taste buds a punch.

I should probably go to Pho Hut more often. Their pho is good, I really like their vermicelli and their banh mi is pretty passable.

Yesterday, we had catering from Spitz. It was awesome. I love their spicy feta. It is magical with their doner meat. It was a magical treat for lunch and I thank all involved.

If you've never been to Spitz, take a trip either the Eagle Rock or Loz Feliz location. You will be happy.

The Bread Is Back

So that awesome bread change that Pho Hut made to their banh mi's must have just been a fluke. The dry, smaller baguettes are back. They still packed in more meat than they usually do, but damn them for getting my hopes up that they had switched to a larger, tastier bread.

Best Banh Mi Ever... In Glendale

Looks like Pho Hut has upgraded their bahn mi. The sandwich was bigger, meatier and all around deliciouser.

The bread was fresher, had a nice crunch with a soft inside and had a buttery goodness to it, oh, and it was about a quart length longer than their sandwich of old. They stuffed a lot more smoky, tender, well marinated beef inside. There were a lot more veggies, especially jalapenos, it was a spicy one today. Looks like the only thing they need to fix is the cilantro. Stop using the whole stems, at least chop them up. Every time I bite into the sandwich I end up pulling the whole piece out of the sandwich. 

I was very surprised and very happy with my banh mi today. Great job, Pho Hut. You made lunch awesome.

More Beef Banh Mi

It was a bit rainy today and that may be why Pho Hut was so damn packed. It may also be the secret as to why the beef banh mi was so good today. They told me twenty minutes for my pick up order, but after getting there I had to wait almost another twenty. I didn't mind waiting, it's just the place is so small and there were so many people waiting I felt bad for the waiters. They had to dodge customers left and right to get orders out. Anyways, on to the sandwich.

The beef was tender and well marinated. The pickled vegetables were abundant, snappy and delicious. The bread tasted fresh and had a nice hard crust on the outside, while the bread was soft and fluffy on the inside. 

Good job today Pho Hut. I wish I could say that to you every time.

Bleh

What you see pictured above was the worst beef banh mi I have ever had. Pho Hut is a hit and miss restaurant and today was probably its biggest miss so far. The meat was fatty and completely under seasoned. The bread was dry and stale. The only thing that was redeemable about that sandwich was the extra amount of pickled vegetables they put on it. I have a feeling they piled on the veggies to try and cover up the inferior meat.

Also, their customer service was strange today. When I handed the woman behind the register a twenty, she just popped it into the register without giving me change and tried to walk away. Not a good way to start off the new year Pho Hut.

Another Beef Banh Mi

Going to Pho Hut for their cheap banh mi's has become pretty standard around the office. Today's wasn't all that good. It was kind of skimpy on the pickled vegetables and the beef was a bit on the fatty side which made it kind of chewy and tough. They told me they were busy and to wait twenty minutes to come pick it up. Even when I got there I had to wait about fifteen more minutes so I figured the sandwich would be nice and hot, but it was room temp. I can't really be upset because of the price of the sandwich, but I do wish they were a bit more consistant.
