Cursed Evolution: Selkies - The Base Info

Selkies:

Selkies, of any breed, are a humanoid ‘Cursed’ with the ability to shift into Pinnipeds (and most are) roughly the same size as an adult grey seal (2.5 Meters long/ 8’2” long and 605 lbs / 274 kgs on average) their ability to shift depends on 2 things, 1, whether or not they have their ‘heavy coat’ and, 2, if they are in enough liquid to submerge any part of their body.

Selkies are, like Werewolves, pack animals the majority of the time, as like the seals they become they tend to be found in groups.

It is considered extremely poor behaviour to offer to take a Selkie’s coat or to inquire how they avoid drowning, or to call them a ‘Mermaid’ or ‘Dog of the Sea’. It is also bad behaviour to refer to their children as ‘Pups’. However, if you offer them fish, or find them a good beach to relax at, it will improve relations.

Selkies, much like in their media portrayals: 1. Transform with the aid of their seal skin and the use of water. 2. Can breathe underwater for as long as a seal can. 3. Are typically more friendly than most in either of their forms.

Selkies have a more ‘Melting’ type of transformation, where their Seal skin coat will melt into their human form and their legs will melt together, this happens relatively quickly.

Selkies eyes will glow in moonlight, they glow brighter when underwater, especially water lit by a full moon.

Selkies have a slight healing factor, which is more prevalent on ‘fatty’ parts of their bodies, but as with Werewolves and Werecats before, this is just noticeably faster than the human healing process.

Selkies have overall stronger senses than humans, when underwater, in truth their senses are dulled when above their watery home, their eyesight and hearing is worse when above water because they are so adapted to life in dark water, they are more sensitive to light and to touch, but they can survive if blinded if they stay in water from the point of blinding onwards.

Selkies will often wear nothing underneath if they choose to wear their ‘heavy coat’s due to how their transformation process works. If you want more descriptive language, if a selkie were to wear anything underneath the coat, it would melt into the space under their skin in their seal form, not only is this dangerous, it can be deadly.

Selkies have a seafood heavy diet, and are talented hunters and foragers underwater, they often take to jobs like lobster fishing when choosing to stay in human form longer.

Humans will accept (though with the same amount of acceptance they have for neurodivergent humans) Selkies, until they transform, usually humans will watch Selkies transform with a mix of horror and amazement.

A good example would be the Anoa’i family, a family of Samoan selkies who rarely ‘go it alone’.

Another good example would be Vader, although he is a lone Selkie, however given he is albino in his seal form, this is more because other selkies have a tendency to abandon the ‘weird’ of their own species.
