Witch curls up into a little ball on her side in her sleep and if there are things there for her to grab onto, she does. She doesn’t actually do a lot of sleeping and functions just fine on only a few hours. She tends to wake up a lot during the night—not over noise, which won’t disturb her if it’s not loud, but just because—and usually she’ll get up, have some water, and then go back to bed. Her official wake-up time is anywhere between five and six AM, and she usually doesn’t go to bed any later than eleven unless she’s busy. In the mornings, she isn’t DEATH AND MISERY, but talking to her before she’s had her morning tea is a lost cause. She sleepwalked as a kid.
Gardener’s sleep schedule is a lot more erratic because she likes naps, but she always wakes up with the sunrise so that she can work on her garden! Sometimes it takes a hit or two on the snooze button but once she’s up, she’s almost immediately peppy. She’s a very sound sleeper. She has this weird habit of sleeping towards the edge of the bed and has rolled off of it on more than one occasion. She can basically make herself comfy and sleep on anything. Usually she just lays on her back and she shifts a little throughout the night but doesn’t like, flail around and ruin everything. She drools a lot.
They’re cuddly dorks together. Witch usually ends up curling into Gardener’s side and Gardener ends up with an arm around her (Witch is forever the little spoon because she is a little bit short and Gardener is like six feet tall). Witch wakes up less often during the night when she’s with Gardener, and when she does wake up, she’s less likely to get up for water for fear of disturbing her (and also because she can get back to sleep okay).
Usually Witch wakes up first but it’s not uncommon for them to wake up more or less at the same time (when they do, Gardener doesn’t hang out hitting the snooze button for ages).
Witch has been practicing her levitation magic so that she can relocate Gardener to more comfortable spots when she decides to take naps in the middle of her garden or on the kitchen table, but it’s not her specialty and she’s super afraid of dropping her or crashing her into something! So she practices by floating blankets onto her.
I have lots of followers on this blog and I think it's probably because of those, like, two DR headcanon posts that got really popular? I hate to be the one to break it to you all, but this is mostly a place where I ramble about OCs and OC concepts every now and again.
Today, we will demonstrate this with an idea for a pair of girlfriends I had while showering: a witch who brews potions, and a gardener who grows most of the herbs and stuff she uses.
General:
They met properly as client and customer (after Gardener Girl's welcome to the town for Witch Girl). Gardener Girl became Witch Girl's primary source for materials right off the bat because she's so good at what she does, so they ended up seeing a lot of each other! Through that they became acquaintances and friends, and eventually Gardener Girl got the nerve to ask Witch Girl out on a date!
Naturally, she picked her up and came with the biggest bouquet ever made.
The two have been together for a few years and they have moved in with each other already. The rest of the town has been waiting for the wedding.
They live in a town sort of comparable to the one in Kiki's Delivery Service in size and structure. It's not very big and the community isn't super close-knit but nobody's really a stranger, either.
Witches are the only humans with any magic. Generally speaking, witches don't really integrate with other humans; after the burning times (i.e. some fictionalized adaptation), they fled en masse and formed their own cities where they wouldn't be persecuted. Discrimination based largely on fear of magic and its consequences still exists and is relatively widespread, but sometimes witches will leave their hometowns regardless. Witch cities are usually much smaller than the ones of non-magic humans, and if witches manage to set up business in a tolerant place, it's almost guaranteed to be successful because of the (very useful and rare) services that only witches can offer. Witches emigrating and then returning to their hometowns is common, but there's not necessarily a shortage of witches settling down and integrating and beginning families where they move to.
I have two different design ideas in my head (whichever one I don't use I'm sure'll get used another time though because they're both very cute): one is a redhead girl with unreasonably curly hair, skinny as a beanpole and lacking anything like a curve, and also has a missing tooth. Alternatively (I think I might like this one more and it's not like I don't have enough skinny redheads already?) I'm also thinking a fat Latina (I'll narrow it down if I go with this one) with super wavy hair.
Either way, she's very tall, covered in freckles and sunburn, frequently keeps her hair up in a bun/ponytail, wears a big straw hat basically everywhere, likes the color green a lot, usually wears flip-flops or sandals, and wears tank tops with high-waisted shorts a lot but not the fancy fashionable kind because anything she wears has a tendency to get covered in dirt within the hour.
She has zero qualms about getting her hands dirty, as you would expect of someone who makes her living digging around in the dirt! She'll basically waltz right into the mud without hesitating for a second if it is a requirement for getting things done, or if it's in her way and she doesn't feel like going around it. Her knees are always covered in dirt. Along with most of the rest of her.
She's super duper sociable! She's one of those people who knows everybody and who everybody knows. She always greets people who move in (and she knows when someone is new to the town) with a big bouquet personally delivered right to their doorstep!
Being around people and being friendly just makes her really happy! She grew up with a lot of little siblings, so being in an energetic, lively environment filled with people just comes naturally to her.
She's a little flighty and ditzy seeming, and always upbeat.
But she's also very smart! She has an excellent memory, is a huge math whiz, and has a general sense of wisdom about her.
She doesn't handle people being mean very well. She's so consistently sweet and upbeat and surrounded by similar people all the time that it's tough for her to process that anyone could be consistently cruel, and then be unchanging and unapologetic.
She worries about being mean herself, too, and sometimes accidentally ends up as somewhat of a doormat—she doesn't know how to say "no" to people and takes on a lot of responsibility she can't handle because she wants to be helpful to everyone!
But if you mess with the people who are important to you she'll...okay, well, she'll probably cry, but she'll get the closest thing to angry she can manage.
Witch girl:
I don't really have as clear of an image in my head for her design—I think she'll have short, kind of cropped hair, maybe in something like a bob, and she'll wear lots of headbands. In general her fashion sense is very subdued.
She's a lot quieter than her girlfriend.
She tends to come off as cold to a lot of people upon first impression, but she doesn't mean to and she's really not! She just has a tough time expressing herself, so she ends up acting somewhat reserved and then curt and distant without really realizing or wanting to.
Despite that she's somewhat shy, she's actually a huge dork and wicked boisterous about it when you get her in the right environment (this generally means "alone with or without her girlfriend").
She gets super serious about her potions brewing, though—she basically locks herself up in her brewing room to do it, and if you interrupt her for anything less than the apocalypse, she gets really mad. She's hyper-focused when brewing; it's kind of a miracle that she even notices anything going on around her short of the apocalypse?
The brewing thing is something she has a natural knack for. Other than that, book-smarts aren't really her thing. She knows just enough math to keep her shop going, but her girlfriend usually takes care of the big stuff.
She doesn't have a close-knit friends circle in her town, although she goes on a lot of outings with her girlfriend's friends. Instead, she has a bunch of pen pals from her old home city that she keeps in close contact with.
She left her home on her own when she was probably eighteen or a little younger (I'm thinking both the girls are in their earlyish twenties?). She never had a close relationship with her family (she's an only child), and her town was always somewhat dead, even by witch city standards. She felt stifled and like there wouldn't be any future for her if she didn't break out of there, so she packed up and left.
She tried settling in a few different towns without success at first—she was all but driven out by a largely prejudiced population—and was close to giving up and going home when she tried again and was greeted almost immediately by a young lady bringing her a big bouquet of welcome.
Most of this I made up as I went along. Here's as far as I've gotten!
