Felt like drawing a bunch of mahous...so I grabbed one from each of the magical-girl (or boy) webcomics I follow, and put them in a loosely-rainbow-themed team-up.
Arcturus, Guardian of Heaven from Shattered Starlight by @mochazombie Alchemical Water from Sleepless Domain @sleepless-domain Holly from Leif & Thorn @leifandthorn Riley from Angel Moxie by Dan Hess Phoenix Flair (femme version) from Phoenix Flair @phoenixflaircomic Willow from XIII: Of Magic & Muses @xiicomic Gabe from Magical How by @eyugho
Phoenix Flair characters with trollsonas
Isabella: obviously
Lily: technically has one because she saw Isabella's once and asked she draw her "like one of those gray little goblins"
Anala: burned all her middle school doodles of her trollsona hanging out with Nepeta
Claire: doesn't have one, but she definitely saved at least one of anala's old drawings of them
abso fucking lutely
hey everyone, sorry i've been so quiet, but i have good news! the phoenix flair movie deal finally landed, so i won't have to do the comic anymore! instead, look forward to the release of PHOENIX FLAIR THE MOVIE this fall, starring Scarlett Johansson and Chris Pratt!
the new kids are bad influences
Wait, from what I've seen so far, Phoenix Flair is a response/re-examination/whatever of Magical Girl stuff that doesn't revolve around lots of dead magical girls? Is that even allowed? I mean, to make a cynical/critical response to magical girl stuff that doesn't seem to have a creepy, at least quasi-misogynistic fixation on their deaths?
haha! this means a lot to me! i think the magical girl genre could seriously be spiced up by more introspective meta stuff- and it already has been, by stuff like Utena and even Princess Tutu! but if your only idea on how to examine a genre is to have a lot of blood and sadness and a scene where the character is covered in blood and they’re laughing creepily and their pupils are real small…. well, lol
anyways, i’m glad that that part of Phoenix Flair got across to you, and i’m honestly really happy you phrased it as ‘a response/examination’ as opposed to a ‘deconstruction,’ cause that’s really what it is! it’s meant to examine the genre but not tear it down, you know?
this ask made me really happy! i keep saying it over and over but i wanna return to Phoenix Flair real soon…. and i will, maybe sooner than is apparent??? let’s see…
