PHOENIX HEART
We people can forget our history, but the planet remembers. She remembers everything we love and hate, everything we seek and abandon. Geos was there one thousand years ago, and she’s here now, and she’ll be here when we’re all gone and the wars we’ve forged are but more nameless craters in her body. But this time, just this once, let’s commit something to our collective memory, and let’s keep it there forever.
An alien invasion’s too important to forget.
genre: science fiction (light fantasy elements?)
current stage: first draft/Nano draft
themes/topics: war, anti-authoritarianism, friendship, emotions, teenage protagonists, coming of age, alien cultures, religion, anachronism, fuzzy animal-people
projected length: 85-100k with almost-certain sequel(s)
summary: Princess Constanza’s homeland, the Kingdom of Muna, has been invaded by the Estellan Empire. Using their new flying machines, they tear across the land towards the royal palace with the goal of stealing the Phoenix Heart. It is an artifact said to be the key to summoning a phoenix from inside Geos’s second sun, but the Estellans don’t believe; they only want glory. Guided by faith, spurred by vengeance and the need to save her mother, Connie takes the Heart and flees for the Mountain of Heralds. Nothing stands in her way, not even dark rumors about the Heart’s true function.

more info: Geos was originally created as a worldbuilding project in 2015. i wrote a draft of Phoenix Heart for Camp Nano in April of 2016 and have revisited it on occasion ever since. when i sat down and thought about which of my original stories i wanted to focus on, i decided on this one almost instantly. it’s one of my favorites of all the stories i’ve created, and i hope i can do it justice.
Gonna beat up flara's ableist ass
I can finally post about my blorbos
I gave everything I had just to see you smile. I knew I was alone when I turned back and saw no one there. I knew I was alone when I didn’t feel understood or cared for. I was just a provider to give and give - out of the blue - to save you. But you never saw how I needed saving. You never saw how my heart bled, no matter how many times it was shoved in your face. Because it was never about me - it was about you - and that was the whole problem. Love is a two-way street, I broke my back for you, and you took it for granted. That’s the real reason we are split, and I need to come to terms with it. Because you have emotionally abused me for years, and it doesn’t matter to you. The only thing that matters to you is that I broke up with you. Because you didn’t have my back when you expected me to have yours. You can’t lean on someone forever, sometimes they need to lean, too. You weren’t down with that, and that’s why you’re alone. I guess you can say; It took me a long time to figure out that you don’t care.
