phonotrope! this was... incredibly difficult.
Doggy paddling dog. This will end up on a phonotrope sometime soon this was just a test that the animation would work. And it does! . . . . . . #animation #animatorsofinstagram #dog #doge #doggypaddle #illustration #herefordcollegeofarts #hereford arts #illustrationanimatiom #animatic #phonotropes #phonotrope (at Hereford College of Arts)
Behind the scenes. I have no idea how I managed to do this in one day
VIDEOS: Some of the more complex record player animations drawn by children at my Great Exhibition Road Festival workshop for Imperial College London the other weekend. I love what they’ve done with different colours, sizes of bike cogs and lovely decorative flourishes. This was my second gig with the phenakistoscope drawing activity, and it’s developing nicely, with results quickly improving. Where can I take this workshop next? Schools? Animation festivals? More art and science events? My record player animation workshop at last weekend’s Great Exhibition Road Festival for Imperial College London got a mention on BBC Radio 4 Inside Science! A child participant explained the phenakistoscope process fairly concisely. Science communication job done! … Child: We’ve gone to the Spirograph thing about illusional art and we’ve seen that if you spin the pictures at different speeds, the colours go in different directions. Reporter: So cool! And did it look really strange when you were watching it spin around? Child: Yeah, because your phone breaks down the frames, ’cos if you used it with your brain it just looks like a blur, but then if you use your camera it sees it 30 times a second, so it can make, like, art with it. … Listen to the whole programme on BBC Sounds - link in bio. … @la_reine_et_l_oiselle. @exrdfestival @imperialcollege @instantwarhol #opticalillusion #opticalillusions #phenakistoscope #phonotrope #animation #phasepatterns #trippy #artworkshop #childrensart #stem #steam #hypnotic #exrdfest #bbc #bbcradio4 #sciencecommunication (at Great Exhibition Road Festival) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfPqsFSIfXX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
It was my absolute pleasure and honour to work with these two brainy scientist folk for Imperial College ‘Lates’ in March, and Great Exhibition Road Festival last weekend. Mathilde de Kerangal and Anirudh Kulkarni are neuroscientists investigating auditory illusions (eg: Shepard Tone and McGurk Effect) where the brain misinterprets sounds. They also showed me some weird optical illusions where striped and spinning patterns appear to move differently to reality. These effects share themes of phase shifting and movement that inspired me to devise my optical illusion record player animation workshop. I hope we keep in touch. Bonus fact: Mathilde is French and a very talented seamstress. She wore some of her hand-sewn dresses to the festival! Check out her encroyable crafting at @la_reine_et_l_oiselle. @exrdfestival @imperialcollege @instantwarhol #opticalillusion #opticalillusions #phenakistoscope #phonotrope #animation #phasepatterns #trippy #artworkshop #childrensart #stem #steam #hypnotic #exrdfest (at Imperial College London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfMYJymonJ2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
VIDEOS: Some of the brilliant eye-boggling record player animations created by children at my Great Exhibition Road Festival art-science workshop for Imperial College London last weekend. I picked these ones because they’re super simple but demonstrate the quirks of the phenakistoscope animation process. Parallel lines appear to spin, differences in strokes cause wobbly movement, dots can be animated and I love the dancing curlicues! I’m thinking this’d be a great activity to bring to an animation festival… @exrdfestival @imperialcollege @instantwarhol @la_reine_et_l_oiselle @cliveandrews #opticalillusion #opticalillusions #phenakistoscope #phonotrope #animation #phasepatterns #trippy #artworkshop #childrensart #stem #steam #hypnotic #exrdfest (at Imperial College London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfMUmSGoK0m/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
