Photo Tip: Wait for the Light

During my last hike I came across an old bait shop. Because I love abandoned buildings I took a quick shot with my camera. But it was the middle of the day, and the light was pretty flat so the photo was uninspired. 

I continued on with my exploring and when I came back to the bait shop the light had changed. It was later in the day and the sun was lower in the sky. The resulting photo is much better, the wood colors are warmer and the shadows are more interesting.

Remember, if your photos are uninspiring, wait for the light.

Taking photos of yourself with your phone? Record a video instead, striking all your poses. Then watch through the video and screen capture your favorite shots.

No tripod? Use a paper cup (or even better recycle a pringles can) by cutting 2 notches on the brim of the cup (on opposite sides) and bam! A tripod. Also, if using a pringles can, be sure to put something heavy at the bottom (like some rocks or something) to make sure it doesn’t tip over.

Photo Tip: Be Prepared

It was a beautiful evening to head out for a walk. I debated about taking my camera with me, and decided in the end to take it. While walking my usual route, I came across a carnival being set up. The bright, fun colors were a perfect contrast to the usual historical brick townhouses of my city. I was very glad I had decided to bring my camera.

And of course, playing with shadows. The next time you’re out and about, take that camera with you, you can’t predict what you might see.

Photo Tip: Shoot After the Rain

Last winter I set out for a hike on a grey, overcast day. I took my camera, but wasn’t anticipating getting any good shots because of the flat light. When I got to the woods, I was pleasantly surprised to find that everything was still dripping and glistening from the early morning rain. I was able to get some great shots after all.

The next time it rains, get out there with your camera!

Photo Tip: Move Closer

During a recent hike I spied a fallen sycamore branch and its interesting bark patterns and snapped a photo.

The branch was too far away to really see the bark patterns, so I got closer.

That was better, so I got closer and tried some different angles to get a  more interesting shot.

I love the curve on this part of the branch and the knobs that almost look like eyes.

I like the composition of this photo and how the leave make a great background.

This is my favorite shot, I love how the shadows interact with the shapes on the bark.

Next time you’re out with your camera, remember to get closer.
