During a blizzard in Joshin’etsukogen National Park, on the island of Honshu, a Japanese macaque shakes off snow and water drops while resting on a rock that’s poking out of a hot spring. For a year Jasper obsessed about the wind swirling over the famous hot springs within the park. It resulted in this photo of a Japanese macaque that seems to fly through the galaxy on a magic carpet. On another day he found about 30 macaques enjoying a steamy soak, their heads covered in fresh snow. The warm water has a very relaxing effect on the monkeys, and most of them were asleep. He watched with delight as this youngster became increasingly drowsy and eventually closed its eyes. It’s such an honor when an animal trusts you enough to fall asleep in front of you. He used a close-up shot to capture the moment of tranquillity and to emphasize the human likeness. Joel has contributed photos of Arlo and Blue, Grey-tailed moustached monkeys (Cercopithecus cephus cephodes) at the wildlife rehab center of ONG Animals World in Libreville, Gabon. This is a home for many animals that are babies, injured, or are confiscated by the government. As well, he is sharing his photo of American flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) photographed at the Lincoln Children's Zoo. All of the images are part of the Photo Ark, a multi-year documentary project to save species and habitat founded by Joel. A trip to the Photo Ark

 Last month our class went to see Joel Sartore's Photo Ark.  I can happily say that I was pleasantly surprised with the amazing and touching experience that was seeing all of that beautiful endangered species. It really made me think about what we are doing to our planet and its biodiversity. 

 My favorite picture was this one with the weeper capuchin. This species is ranked as "least concern" and human hunting is still one of the major threats to these peculiars little primates. This one, in particular, was covering his face in a very human way that really caught my eye.

Nature has the best patterns, don’t you think?🐸| Repost @joelsartore | Though limon giant glass frogs like this one at @ZooATL are the largest of their related species, they actually only reach about 3.7 cm in length. They require humid environments and are extremely difficult to spot among the dense vegetation of Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia. They have extensively webbed toes, prominent nostrils, and grey, forward facing eyes with horizontal pupils and black reticulations. Since the invasion of the chytrid fungus in Central America, this and many other amphibian species populations have begun to decline.
