Prince Sasuke has to marry but has refused for years because he’s in love with Naruto, a hunter that sells game to the castle.
The two have been meeting in private for years, knowing nothing would be able to come of it but loving eachother anyway.
The king gets sick of Sasuke’s refusals and tells him he’ll either pick a bride at the upcoming masquerade ball or he’ll pick one for him.
Sasuke is delighted.
Naruto may only be the daughter of a dead soldier and a hunter, but she’s a close friend and student of Hatake Kakashi, a daughterless nobleman.
If he were to bring Naruto to the ball Sasuke could choose her and they could be together.
Sasuke sends out a message for Kakashi with instructions and paces his room as he goes over the plan
All he would have to do is identify her by her ring.
BUT one of the kings spies overhears his monologue and rushes to tell the king of Sasuke’s plot.
The king immediately sends out one of his men to find Naruto and instructs him to buy the ring off her
Unaware of Sasuke’s plot, she hands it over in exchange for enough money for several months of food.
Kakashi comes to her the next day with the news and buys her a dress and fox mask for the party. He wasn’t told of the ring part of the plan.
Instead, the king takes the ring and gives it to Ino, a noblewoman he’s been trying to get Sasuke to marry for some time now. He tells her to be quiet during the party and that Sasuke will surly marry her if she wears the ring.
She’s a little disgusted by the ugly thing but does as she’s told.
When the ball arrives, Kakashi escorts Naruto and leads her right to Sasuke before ducking away so they can talk.
However, the same nobleman that bought her ring distracts Naruto with chatter and won’t let her leave to go to Sasuke’s side.
Instead, she’s forced to watch as another blonde woman wearing her ring offer her hand to Sasuke to kiss.
Before she can break away from the nobleman Sasuke grabs the woman by the hand and brings her to the front of the ballroom where he announces she’s the one he’ll marry.
When asked to unmask, Ino reveals her face and accepts his proposal.
The nobleman lets Naruto go but Kakashi catches her just before she collapses on the floor sobbing.
Sasuke is horrified.
