Coloring Tutorial 2

This is pretty much going from scenes that are (usually one) really intense color to more normal skin tone / standard coloring like these:

mainly what’s used is color balance and selective color (it’s not too bad). for this tutorial i’m going to be just coloring the first example, but if anyone wants the last one explained just shoot me a message! here we go:

first we have our gif:

no matter what type of coloring i always start with changing the brightness/darkness of the gif with a layer of curves and usually also a layer of levels, but for this one i only used curves. here’s my setting for that:

there’s not a huge difference, but here’s what we have now:

now for the next two steps is where we start with color balance. for this gif i only used 2 layers, but you may need more or just one depending on what the scene is. for the 2nd example i had to use 3 color balance layers, so it all depends on the scene, and the desired look your going for. but for any scene i always start the same way working from the color balance of the shadows then working the way up to the highlights. here’s my settings for this first layer:

sometimes you may not want to adjust the highlights on the first layer if your getting closer to your desired look. the main thing to keep in mind is that especially with the shadows on this layer, your going to want to adjust the balance to the opposite color of what the scene originally was (like it was really green before so i adjusted it to mainly red). another thing that happens sometimes when you do this is that the scene gets really dark. if that happens, just add another layer of curves below this color balance layer, and that should fix the problem. now what we have looks like this:

now we can see that there’s a big difference compared to what we started with. most of the time with this first layer i try not to just make it right in one go, but try to make the scene more normalish or more manageable in terms of skin tone.

for this second layer i was pretty happy with the shadows and only messed with the midtones/highlights, but the shadows may need adjusting for other scenes. this one wasn’t as extreme compared to the other layer as well, it was more of a standard color balance layer:

remember to still stick with the order of adjusting as before (if you used shadows) shadows -> midtones -> highlights. there wasn’t as drastic of a change, but now we have this:

from this point on it’s really just touching up on the skin tone with selective (because now it looks too yellow) and adding finishing touches on the gif as a whole. after this part is really varies on the need of the scene. for the second example i also used had to also use hue and saturation to get the tone of the skin to what i wanted (and less pixley). i won’t get into really those layers unless someone wants me to explain the how to color the send gif.

but back to the one we’re working on. here the settings for the two selective color layers. these are not really fancy, but standard layers when it comes to adjusting the color of skin:

now we have this:

now the skin looks more red and less yellow then before! next i added a viderance layer of +91, and now we have this:

next i added another selective color layer cause the skin now looks a little too red then a final layer of curves to brighten it up a bit. here’s my settings for those two layers:

and now we’re done! we’ve gone from this:

while this coloring tutorial does work for a lot of these kinds of scenes as the ones above, scenes such like this one:

edit: i was able to somewhat color this scene with the same idea as above with color balance and selective color. it looks like this:

is does take more steps then the tutorial, but it is possible! other than that, i really hope this helped you guys, and if you have any questions please feel free to ask!
