The Hamilton vs Burr duel is on in about 5 minutes! In the meantime, the episode “How Freedom was Won” is on. This particularly caught my attention: Washington being inspired by the FIRST published African American poetess Phyllis Wheatly when he was feeling downtrodden about the condition of his men!
Once again, we visit the Liberty Kids as a throwback to my early childhood getting up too late to watch the early morning Saturday cartoons. I was perusing the episodes and found one were Phyllis Wheatley was in. From 18:22 - 18:39, you can hear her recite the third stanza of "A Hymn to Humanity." Also, if the rest of the episode is of any interest, it covers Benjamin Franklin while he was in England and also the Intolerable Acts which included quartering the "redcoats" without warning.
It's interesting how much of the 18th century literature is incorporated into my childhood and how far it has come from a slave writing poetry in her free time on a small desk.
