Hi, First off welcome to Israel i remember when i first got here, i was also 18 it was quite the culture shock. i was just in thailand loved every second of it! these are all great questions that are very important. i’ll start off by telling you that i came to israel when i was 18 with a program called Garin Tzabar, which actually took care of all those technicalities and in that sense it was a great way to be integrated into israeli society and into the bureaucracy of the IDF, and if it was possible you might be able to join that program and they would be able to help you out with this process. Like i mentioned with the program they actually brought army personnel who asked us questions about units and gibushim. now if you have your profile and its between 72-98 youll be eligible for a combat unit. if i were you id get in touch with a place called Ktzin Hair, they might be able to give you more information, another option is called the Ba’qum which is the base you go to on your first day. so answer your second question, size weight does not matter at all big or small, skinny of fat what it comes down to is your mental strength and being strong enough mentally to get through the training. don’t think they they will start you off running 20km they do it in stages to build you up, just keep that in mind, they break you down to build you back up and most important don’t give up because no matter how tired or soar you are i promise you, you can do it and their is a light at the end of the dark tunnel. finally as i previously mentioned the first day was at the ba’qum very odd feeling, you are with hundreds of other soldiers being drafted on the same day most of whom will be in the same unit as you. its a very nerve-racking day gives you a little taste into what life will be like for you for the next 3 years. it gives you a taste of how its like having a commander, taking orders, being on time when orders are given, and even army food. even though it may seem chaotic but don’t worry youll b fine just go into your first day with an open mind and go with the flow! your doing a great thing and the country appreciates it, i can tell you when you tell people you are a lone soldier they look up to you and most of the time don’t understand why you’d want to but everyone appreciates your contribution. so thanks! and please feel free to comeback ask more question, definitely feel like i made a new friend. best regards, Noam
