Hitting below the belt - 1 Corinthians 6:9-20
Some critics say that Christians are preoccupied with the bellow-the-belt issues: promiscuity, homosexuality, abortion. In this powerful chapter, Paul explains that sexual sins involving the body are directly related to spiritual issues involving the soul.
The Corinthians seemed to hold a confused concept of spiritual freedom. They claimed that what they did with the physical body didn’t really hurt the immortal soul. It’s an intriguing argument - at least superficially. But Paul didn’t buy it.
Paul compared people’s hunger for sex with the hunger of food, arguing that those who are slaves to food misunderstand the purpose of the stomach. Those who are soaves to sex are equally confused.
When Paul talked about prostitutes, every citizen of Corinth understood. His main point, however, was something they may not have heard before. When you join yourself to a prostitute, the apostle explained, you make yourself one with her, this sinning against the body, which is the “temple of the Holy Spirit”. In other words, what you do with your body DOES influence your soul. The two are related; physical sin corrupts the spiritual being.
Sexual sin matters. It’s not that believers are sexually uptight. It’s merely that we care about our souls and are well aware of the powerful impact sin has on both our physical and spiritual lives .
