Excited to see the pages of @geomagazin with my project on the defense and preservation of the "Pueblo Originario Kichwa de Sarayaku" in the Amazon rainforest of #ecuador🇪🇨 Thanks to @larslindemann_geo for the support in the assignment and to my friend #JanChristophWiechmann for his texts and for sharing the journey. After 25 years of resistance, the community has succeeded at preventing oil extraction within their 333,592.3 acre ancestral land. In 2012, the Kichwa community gained a historic victory for the indigenous rights when the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled against Ecuadorian Government for authorizing oil exploitation and militarization of the Kichwa territory without prior consulting with the people; thus violating the rights of the Sarayaku community. Sarayaku, “The Midday Town/Pueblo del Mediodía”, owes its name to an ancient prophesy foretold by the old shamans. They perceived Sarayaku as a pillar for territory defense, including cultural and spiritual traditions. It is a lighthouse that shines as bright as the midday sun and the last town to resist the threat of the modern extractionist model or exploitation. Antonio Mayancha, Coordinador de Sisa Ñampi (Frontera de Vida) bajo la lluvia y sembrando los áboles que entre 20 a 40 años, cuándo serán los árboles más altos y sus flores se podrán ver desde el cielo, señalarán el perímetro del territorio sagrado del Pueblo Originario Kichwa de Sarayaku en la Amazonía ecuatoriana, en la Provincia de Pastaza. La lucha por la conservación del territorio Kichwa comenzó con la llegada de las compañías petroleras a Ecuador. Desde entonces, la comunidad se ha mantenido unida en resistencia por la defensa de la selva y la preservación de su patrimonio biocultural. Dionicio Machoa, 47 años, responsable del Departamento de Recursos Naturales, miembro del equipo técnico y coordinador de los Kaski Runas revisando el material grabado por una cámara trampa instalada por los Kaski Runas, “Guardianes de la Selva Viviente” de Sarayaku. Tras 25 años de resistencia, la comunidad ha logrado prevenir la extracción petrolera en su territorio ancestral de 135.000 hectáreas. En 2012 ganó una victoria histórica para los derechos indígenas cuando la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos falló en contra del Gobierno ecuatoriano por haber violado los derechos de la comunidad de Sarayaku autorizando la explotación petrolera y la militarización del territorio sin haberlo consultado previamente con  la comunidad.  Sarayaku, “El pueblo del Mediodía”, le debe su nombre a una antigua profecía de los Chamanes ancestrales por ser un pilar de defensa territorial, cultural y espiritual.
