"Merkel, Sarkozy Meet Ahead Of Brussels Summit". Unpacking the Pico Dolly.
For you camera lovers...
Time for Camera Barbies and Kens!
So about a few days back I saw an advertisement for these suckers. The CineSkates
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6ZgQQxk2no
Cool right? JUST RIDICULOUS EXPENSIVE AS HECK. Seriously? 150 for the skates alone? Now I can think of so many applications that would work with these, but man... 150 bucks. (Plus I have the gorilla pod focus already and love it to death.)
AND THEN THIS CAME OUT OF NOWHERE TODAY. The pico dolly!

FOR $60-90 (with or without friction arms) YOU BEST RETHINK YOUR PRICE MR CINESKATES.
BUT HOLD ON A SECOND. THERE'S PROS AND CONS TO EACH RIGHT? Well I suppose so. Ok I'll bite.
CineSkates Pros: 1. Definitely can go in unusual positions and places thanks to the gorillapod. Without that, it would be dead in the water.
2. Curved surfaces are easy for this sucker to fly on.
3. Incredibly light weight when you think about it.
4. Plenty of proven demos from the videos. Also that fricken fast spin looks awesome.(Add in objects or other stuff flying under that spin and you got a mighty epic angle.
5. It can go a decent amount high thanks to the tripod there!
6. Joby is backing him now. THATS HUGE.
7. Dear god. That video is so fluid. That's ridiculous. IT SHOULDN'T BE THAT FLUID. BUT IT IS.
8. Expandable technology. This is just ace right here. Clip/Magnetize on and go for each part. Just imagine this DOWN the road.
Cineskates Cons: Ok MAJOR CON HERE. It can only hold 5 pounds currently. Yeah. 5 Pounds. THATS YOUR CAMERA AND LENS RIGHT THERE. Good luck getting anything else on the sucker like accesories and other such.
2. Which brings me to point number 2. Gorillapod currently doesn't have an accessory head, which means you're going off to buy yourself a flatbed or attachment in order to do this. Thats an extra couple of bucks right there. Possibly even a flexible arm to do certain shots with.
3. YOU KNOW THERE WILL BE BIGGER WHEELS. Let me rephrase that. THERE WILL BE BIGGER WHEELS. How else will you be able to hold other accessories, tripods, and othersuch with the system you got now and just that mini wheel. IMPOSSIBLE. Unless kickstarters would get an extra discount off these items. *writes down to suggest this.* (This is partly due to the fact of top heavy stuff on the gorillapod, unless you kept it low and rolled it completely spread out. then MAYBE it would work.)
4. Motorized Wheels are already in production as we speak.... ugggg. Come on don't reveal that to me. I'd just wait and spend the money then for some extra benefits. ALSO HARD TERRAIN WHEELS ARE COMING TOO. (that's like what 300 extra bucks now since the one pair is 150?)
5. This doesn't include a head for to hold tripod. WELP YOU'RE BONED WHEN THAT COMES ALONG. GUESS I'M PAYING A FRICKEN RIDICULOUS AMOUNT MORE. Again, Where is an extra kickstarter benefit for discounting people entrusting you to make it happen.
6. THE PRICE. NEED I SAY MORE? 150 only covers the wheels. THIS DOESNT INCLUDE THE 300 FOR EVERYTHING ELSE if you don't have a gorillapod to use with this. (I'm seeing CASH CASH $$$ signs flying everywhere at you guys who aren't thinking on it. I'm fortunately that I already bought a gorillapod focus and ballhead on sale during christmas for round 90 total)
7. HOW MUCH CAN WE CHARGE FOR FUTURE PRODUCTS, THE GAME. aka I'm not sure I'm feeling good about when I'm ready to make upgrades.
OK NOW FOR PICO DOLLY
Pico Dolly Pros: 1. After that rant, Price is awesome. Lets face it, you're getting crafted steel tools that are still light weight and for 60 total, 90 for the flexing/friction arm, that's pretty damn good!
2. Just as portable as the other option.
3. You can actually stack stuff on it. Like your attachments and other equipment. Oh man can you stack it. Look at that video of it spinning with a giant LED light and stabilizer and such. That's gotta be over 5 pounds RIGHT THERE.
4. Friction arm and such. you know your camera is going to be stable and that sucker would be handy for any extra accessory!
Pico Dolly Cons: 1. Spin video isn't smooth. And this is a big one. Why? Look at the video during the coke can spin scene. There are bumps that are apparent. Why should we see the slow motion vids only? I'm not sure he's perfected the sucker yet. Yep I'm calling it. What if I want those fast motion shots? Like that pool shot in the CineSkates. That or he needs to redo the video and show us these capabilities in motion! Imagine it going fast too regularly, eh eh? (Still that slow mo video with the beer is pretty nice.)
2. Its flat only. Which means it can't do all the crazy stuff that the gorillapod might be able to do with this.
3. Motorized wheels ALSO coming and in production.
4. Having a hard time finding much else given that the flexing arms and ball heads can fix some height problems. Though this brings up a great point that Cinetics has some good ideas in place with the tripod tops coming out. I just wish they were included in the whole package than the gorillapod tops alone.
SO FINAL VERDICT: Well I still got until October to decide when the kickstarter goes away. Still not completely convinced but gosh darn I'm getting there. Though the price is infinately cheaper on the pico dolly. Maybe I'll just buy three of those for 60 each and screw it into my tripod legs HA. BOOM. SOLVED THAT PROBLEM.
But seriously. SERIOUSLY. PRICE POINT. It's important these days. Screw it I'm buying an inkling. WELP!
I'm very interested in the CineSkates, it's such a wonderful idea from Justin but man those extra accessories by the time I'm done buying them I swear I'll be upwards of 1000 when I could of bought an ACTUAL dolly or robotized dolly arm. Plus I really wish he could bundle the other heads and othersuch instead of ONE WHEEL SET $150. I'd end up waiting for a heavy duty version of the wheels, much like when I simply spent cash on the Gorillapod focus instead of the lower grade stuff.
I'm making a prediction and I BET it will come true. Watch Gorillapod take advantage of this and make a super duper gorillapod that is thicker and stronger than focus so they can take advantage of these. Also watch as they make their own shoehorn and accessory slot ball head or flatbed. I GUARANTEE YOU IT WILL HAPPEN.
Ok, my rants are over. Do what you will with this knowledge. Or if you know an even better option, let the people know.
