Previously I’ve always learned that a tracking shot is a left-right movement with a fixed vertical axis (so no angle change), and a dolly shot is a forward-backward movement also with a fixed vertical axis and no angle change. But I’ve always applied that to animation and digital things rather than live-action filmmaking, so I wasn’t well-versed in the actual filmmaking equipments

Until today. Where I learned the tracking shot is called so because it’s a camera amounted on a track, and a dolly shot is called so because the camera is mounted on a dolly (and a steady cam is yet another type of equipment)

And that, not only is a tracking shot slightly different from a dolly shot in equipment,
