Fading Pictoglyphs
#Repost @alperinitiative #artisttakeover ・・・ Below the root of the Cacao Tree, Bat, Firefly, Turkey, Monkey, Dog, Jaguar, Frog, Snake and Fish, are made to see. The Indigenous/Maya mythologies I intend to regenerate in my work are dense, natural, as relevant today in a modern world as they ever were. My most recently published set of #pictoglyphs define a more animist and humanizing facet of Maya culture - #AnimalesInteriores. Bat, Firefly, Turkey, Monkey, Dog, Jaguar, Frog, Snake and Fish are very much of this earth not the Heavens. These are quirky familiars grounded in the creation myths with the Cacao Tree at their centre - THE IMMORTAL KAKAW* TREE. Some of the Animales sculptures, will be a part of The Looking Glass: Immigrant Artists of Washington, opening at the #Alper at @aumuseum_katzen on June 18. One of the Animales will be opening its fangs - a dark underworld gateway, installed in the AU Museum's glass doors very, very soon, all thanks to the Alper Intiative to propagate living DC arts.
