brought to you by hideous jetlag
Through the glass wall separating him from arrivals, Erwin watched Levi's eyes light up when he saw Erwin through the glass. He clutched the bouquet of flowers tighter, suddenly self conscious of how large it was in his hand. It didn't matter, since he was the only one waiting for the 10:20 flight from Trenton, but he still shifted awkwardly as he watched Levi half-jog towards him and pushed through the glass door. He ran right past Erwin in what Erwin had learned to be glee, albeit a very tame expression of it, and crouched down in front of the grey plastic cage Erwin had left a few meters away. "Oh, my god, you brought him," Levi poked his fingers through the holes in the metal cage door. "Hi, baby. Hi, I missed you, little poop face." Levi had spoken barely loud enough for Erwin to hear and despite his positivity that no one else had heard Levi's embarrassing cooings, Erwin snorted at how oddly attached Levi was to their cat. Levi turned from the cage, keeping his fingers ever-wiggling through the metal holes. "You wanna fight me, Smith?" "You literally ran right past me," Erwin laughed and opened his arms, amused but impatient for a hug. "You love the cat more than me." "Maybe," Levi abandoned the cage and fell into Erwin's chest, squeezing him and breathing deeply at the front of his shirt. Muffled, he continued, "I didn't expect him to pick me up." "Yeah, well, welcome home," he pressed a kiss to the top of Levi's head and released him, only to be pulled back down for a proper one. "You gonna carry my luggage?" Levi asked when he broke away. Erwin traded him the bouquet for his little wheeled suitcase. Levi sniffed at the roses, little pointed nose buried for a moment in the fleshy folds of the petals, and gave Erwin a fond smile. Erwin's heart jumped at the sight, light and bright softness rubbed up against the other. The face he had missed so much. "That's what I'm here for." They stopped at the first McDonalds they saw, Erwin insisting on the drive-thru so they could get home before 3AM, Levi agreeing because, God, the nightfolk of fast food restaurants were an undesirable sort. The pitch black night and the sparse amount of other travelers on the highway lulled Levi to sleep in between bites of his burger. Finally Erwin had to slow down to save the sandwich from being lost on the floor (and, as a result, himself from a scolding once the dried bits of bread and burger, sadly limp lettuce bits stuck themselves to Levi's shoes). "You're a mess," he said as he tucked the burger back in its bag and stowed it on the arm rest between them. Levi grunted, half asleep, then commandeered Erwin's hand for his own taking, curling up with it as best he could in the passenger's seat. "Twenty-six hours," Levi muttered above the rush of their speed against the passing forest. "Been at this shit for twenty-six hours." "Mm-hm," Erwin adjusted his hand, twisted awkwardly in Levi's grasp. "Go to sleep; we still have a while before we get home." Pinprick stars against the ink of the sky and the silence of the night carried them home.
