i'm curious what you think about the new cast though! as far as i understand, a lot of emphasis and buildup was put on luke that he was supposed to take out the empire, being the son of darth vader himself. i think some fans are disappointed that didn't happen

I can understand that sense of disappointment, but I think The Last Jedi handled it so well, that it really worked beautifully.

The whole point of this new trilogy is to move forwards, not backwards, and so allowing the new characters to more firmly take center stage is great, since it means it won’t have to piggyback on the original trilogy as a crutch, and instead stand on it’s own two feet, and be it’s own thing, because that’s the best way to keep Star Wars vital and interesting, instead of trying to rehash old ideas, or appease an unpleasable fanbase with needless pandering to the base with references to random trivia that nobody else outside the cult of fans understands the significance of.

Or else you become a closed circle of self appeasing jerks, focused only on trivia and needlessly complicated backstories for stuff that doesn’t need explaining or backstory.
