There is a new-ish place “in town” that will make your next pizza dining experience custom and quick.
A group of bloggers were invited to try out Pie Five Pizza Company in Southfield, at the corner of 12 Mile and Telegraph. This is the first location in Michigan for this Dallas based company with hopes to expand in our state.
Pie Five Pizza offers a unique experience for pizza. Customers are able to customize their pizza crust and pizza toppings in a line order style like Subway or Qdoba. The pizza is available within 5 minutes of when it enters the oven. All of this happens with unlimited toppings for $6.99.
There is even a gluten-free crust option. Many of the toppings are also gluten-free and the list actually names gluten toppings to make it easier to stay away from those.
The GFDM family got in line behind Hope from A Busy Mom’s Slow Cooker Adventures to make our pizzas. The staff changed their gloves and got the gluten-free crusts out of their sealed bags and put them on their own dishes. We were able to create our pizza and then the person at the end of the pizza oven was notified that a gluten-free pizza was on the way down. The cutter was changed out and the pizzas were deposited into their own box.
We picked three different pies and did a little mix and match when we got back to the tables.
For those that were eating gluten-free our favorite was the BBQ Chicken with Pineapple. The other two were good but we would all choose the BBQ Chicken again over the others.
There was a bit of concern while eating gluten-free at Pie Five. While we were there we observed two things that would make eating there not-so celiac friendly. When pizza comes out of the large oven it arrives at a cutting table. That cutting table is also the table that houses the dough machine.
There was flour all around the dough machine, table and pizza boxes that sat on that table. Had it not been noticed by our group, the gluten-free pizza would have been placed in a box that was contaminated with flour. When mentioned the problem was fixed and a new box from over the register was used.
We were also told that there would not be any cross contamination of the sauces because the ladles are not rubbed in the sauce touching gluten crust. That is not true. On our second trip through the line we observed the ladle going back into the pizza sauce after it was rubbed all over a few gluten crusts. (Thankfully no one got sick that we know of.)
You could avoid this by getting the BBQ Chicken or Margarita that uses sauces and oils delivered by a bottle method.
We are bringing you this information, not as a poor review, but so you may take caution and be proactive while eating gluten-free here. Truthfully we are a bit shocked that there were concerns after reading a great gluten-free review at Week99er a while back.
Overall we enjoyed our experience. The gluten-teenager even liked the gluten-free crust over the regular crust. We would stop in again when in the area.
