Here’s the second piece I did for the Piklopedia zine! I’m still super proud of this one. Had the honor of doing the Quaggled Mireclops, probably one of the most unique boss designs I’ve seen. Check the zine out to see a bunch more wonderful art from various artists!
Who lays the nectar eggs found in the Pikmin games? It might seem like a silly question, but for a series with such extensive lore surrounding its creatures it is surprising that it remains a mystery. Nectar eggs are a mysterious item found in Pikmin 2, Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4. The eggs themselves are rarely acknowledged by the leaders and can contain a wide array of different things.
When broken, nectar eggs usually release a form of nectar or raw material. Curiously, there are also several creatures associated with these eggs, but it’s never been explicitly stated which actually produces them. Let’s look at the candidates:
Firstly, there are the Honeywisps. Honeywisps sometimes carry nectar eggs as they float through the air back to their nests. However, they don’t seem to be producing these eggs themselves, as in Pikmin 1 they can be seen carrying pure nectar collected from flowers.
Given they intend to feed the nectar from the nectar eggs they carry to their young, it seems more likely that they sometimes just steal nectar eggs from their nests of origin instead of collecting nectar from flowers.

The next creatures are the Mitites. Mities are a type of insect that occasionally hatch from broken nectar eggs in great numbers and produce nectar when defeated, which initially makes them seem like good candidates for the producers of these eggs. However, the nectar eggs notably don’t resemble insect eggs - and for good reason! The Mitites are actually parasites that lay their eggs within the eggs of a “particular species”, with their larvae feeding on the nectar the eggs provide.
“These parasitic insects feed on eggs. Upon reaching maturity, they excrete a special pheromone that attracts females of particular species, enticing these females to swallow the mitites whole. (Pikmin, however, seem to dislike the scent.) After entering the host female's body, the mitites lay their own eggs inside the host's eggs just prior to the host spawning.”

Similarly, the egg-like Sunsquishes can also be found within nectar eggs. These are explicitly “other creatures’ eggs”, making them a species that parasitises on the eggs like the Mitites.
“A type of primitive organism called a protochordate. In its juvenile state, it has a skeleton-like structure called a notochord. It flaps its finned tail to move and lives within other creatures' eggs as it grows.”
[Source: Captain Olimar, Employee of Hocotate Freight and Captain of the S.S. Dolphin, Playable Character in Pikmin 4, July 2023]
That leaves us with the Burrowing Snagrets. In Pikmin 4, Downy Snagrets, the infant form of the Burrowing Snagret, occasionally hatch from nectar eggs. These seem to be the most likely candidates for the actual producers of nectar eggs.
As established in a previous post, almost all extant life on PNF-404 is made up of nectar, which would extend to the nutrients in the egg yolk.
“Nectar is a vital source of nutrition that most life on this planet depends on. Whether it's in the form of an egg yolk, sap, or honey, I leave up to your imagination!”
[Source: Dalmo, Sozorian Animal Enthusiast and researcher, Non-Player Character in Pikmin 4, July 2023]
Nectar eggs also strongly resemble bird eggs and Burrowing Snagrets are certainly large enough to produce them. They’re also large enough to swallow Mitites whole and are even said to eat insects in the Piklopedia.
“The majority of snagret species lie in wait to ambush and capture prey, with a body type perfectly adapted to such sudden strikes. It violently attacks small, surface-dwelling insects.”
[Source: Captain Olimar, Employee of Hocotate Freight and Captain of the S.S. Dolphin, Playable Character in Pikmin 2, August 2004]
What’s more is that Snagret has the widest distribution of a species after the Bulborb, which explains why nectar eggs can be found all over the world across the Pikmin games.
“Distributed across a relatively wide range, subspecies of snagret suited to the varying soil conditions have emerged, making the snagret the most geographically represented species besides the bulborb.”
[Source: Captain Olimar, Employee of Hocotate Freight and Captain of the S.S. Dolphin, Playable Character in Pikmin 2, August 2004]
So in short, female Burrowing Snagrets lay their eggs. Those that are fertilised will produce Downy Snagrets, while unfertilised eggs will produce nectar. Sometimes, a female Burrowing Snagret will eat a Mitite, resulting in Mitite larvae hatching within and feeding on the eggs laid by the Burrowing Snagret. The larval Sunsquish also finds its way into these eggs, while Honeywisps occasionally steal the eggs to feed the nectar within then to their own larvae.
Pikmin 4 introduces some new creatures, and I want to know what everyone thinks of them.
Just in order of the Piklopedia (shout out to the pikmin wiki for this info)
Albino Dwarf Bulborb, Jumbo Bulborb, Dwarf, Frosty Bulborb, Frosty Bulborb, Sovereign Bulblax (only including this one since it does technically originate from 4), Snowy Blowhog, Blizzard Blowhog, Tusked Blowhog, Horned Cannon Beetle, Frosted Cannon Beetle, Mama Sheargrub, Shearflea, Iceblown Dweevil, Groovy Long Legs, Muckerskate, Snowflake Fluttertail, Startle Spore, Gildemandwee, Gildimander, Miniature Snootwhacker, Mammoth Snootwhacker, Sunsquish, Foolix, Downy Snagret, Whaddlequaff, All the Shellcakes, Toxstool and it's "offspring", Porquillion, Icey Blowhog, Chillyhop, Masterhop, Prickle Puff, Aristrocrab Offspring, Grubchucker, Crusted Rumpup, Bloomcap Bloyster, Bogswallow, Ancient Sirehound, Moss
I feel like they hit more than they miss, G.L.L, Foolix, and the Grubchucker, Mama Sheargrub, and the shellcakes I feel like are perfect
But those like the Snootwhackers, Whaddlequaff, and Tusked Blowhog all just kinda feel the same, and are just basic small enemies. (Plus, theres a miniature and a mammoth snootwhacker, but no median one?)
Also the execution of certain enemies are bad, but their ideas are good, mainly with the Frosty Bulborb and the Wollyhops. I'm not a giant fan of the Frosty Bulb's design, and the Wollywog name change was so unnecessary you've removed a bit of their fantasy aspect for a generic frog describing attribute

little notes from an unknown journalist. Mostly an excuse to render some pikmin with my personal headcanons. i love textures.
(captions under readmore because I know this text isn't very readable)
2nd Img: Red Pikmin are the most common Pikmin species in PNF-404, and likely an explorer's first encounter.
They are identified by their signature, nose-like facial thorn.
Red Pikmin display heightened aggression in comparison to other colors. They use their 'nose' to pierce the hide of their foes, who quickly succumb to the painful assault.
Despite this, they are very friendly to spacefarers.
Fire is a common defense mechanism, and so it is thought Red Pikmin developed their immunity to prey on the likes of the Fiery Blowhog, and clear up territory by 'borrowing' their fire.
3rd Img: Yellow Pikmin are a common species of surface dwelling Pikmin characterized by their large ear-like appendages. Their light weight and love of high perches hint towards semi-arboreal preferences, although this is mere conjecture.
These Pikmin resist and are attracted by electricity, a trait possibly developed due to their habitat being more susceptible to storms.
They are also known for their hoarding behavior, being avid resource diggers and lovers of shiny objects.
Yellows are the first confirmed case of tool use (bombrocks) among Pikmin.
4rth Img: Blue Pikmin are semi-aquatic and the third most common Pikmin on the surface.
Blue Pikmin appear to have a permanently open, downturned mouth.
However, while often used for emoting, this 'mouth' is in fact a gill.
It facilitates gas exchange, enabling the Pikmin to operate underwater without suffocating.
Like all other Pikmin, a Blue's disgestive system is only suitable for consuming liquids, such as nectar.
Blue Pikmin usually prefer to walk along a body of water's bottom.
However, they're capable of incredible bursts of speed by using their powerful stems as a caudal fin, vibrating their leaves through the water.
5th Img: White and Purple Pikmin are rare, cave-dwelling species.
Whites are matched with Winged Pikmin as the smallest species, and the fastest. Their only pigment is the chlorophyll of their leaves and are otherwise albino.
A White's main method of defense is their speed, and their poison, lethal enough to kill an adult Bulborb.
Their oversized eyes are adapted to the dark.
They have a remarkably foul temperament.
Purple Pikmin are incredibly dense. Weighing ten times their size, they have an extremely heavy core, making them powerhouses and also very, very hefty.
Their hairlike trichomes are used as whiskers, navigating tunnels and detecting threats by feeling air movement.
Both species often cohabitate, and are known to attach themselves to surface colonies.
6th Img: Winged Pikmin, alo called Pink Pikmin, are a close relative of White Pikmin. However, their small size and large eyes are about where their similarities end.
Wings are, notably, naturally ocurring transgenic organisms. By repeatedly preying on flying insects, their host Onion appears to have recombined their DNA into a functional flighted form.
The implications of this and the medical applications of Onions are yet unresearched.
Rock Pikmin are part of a classification dubbed 'Hermikmin'. Though coloquially referred to as parasitic, their choice of host (inert stones, usually graphite) make this claim incorrect.
Rocks root inside their chosen stone permanently. This makes them very durable, and unappetizing to predators. However, this makes them clumsy and their internal structures are distorted.
Rock Pikmin with cracked shells will die quickly without the internal pressure.
7th Img: Ice Pikmin are another subspecies of Hermikmin which have evolved for rooting inside slabs of ice.
Even less appetizing than their rocky cousins, Ice Pikmin maintain body temperatures low enough to give would-be predators hypothermia and a bad case of brainfreeze. Their bodies are full of anti-freeze.
They are very rare, requiring temperate to sub-zero habitats to maintain homeostasis, and are very vulnerable to fire or heat.
Glow Pikmin are an exclusively nocturnal species.
Rather than being seeded from Onions, Glows spawn from a subterranean 'Lumiknoll' that emerges at sundown.
They possess many abilities that are hardly explainable by science and are rumored to be unable to die.
Glow Pikmin might not be Pikmin at all.
