Forgive me for being too culturally sensitive.

I’m just now seeing the ‘Free Birds’ film and I’m very disappointed.

The film started out pretty funny and I was curious to see what would happen when the two main characters ended up at the Plymouth Rock. Though when they arrived I just shook my head at the subliminal messaging that the movie carried.

Don’t get me wrong they presented a disclaimer as an introduction of the movie, though as sensitive as Americas history is, they still pardon my language “went there”.

So as the turkeys arrived it was obvious that they represented Native Americans: there were feather head dresses and face paint markings on their ‘red’ skin. The way that the European settlers were hunting them and the story that the chief of the turkeys regarding how the land was theirs until the settlers came and started to hunt touches too close to home.

They also pointed fun at disabilities and birth defects.

I just wish that movie directors and writers had more common sense and were more knowledgable of history. They made it seem like they had to validate what really went on in the past with the massacres and placed the turkeys in the place of the Native Americans who suffered so harshly.

Children need to know the truth, all this made up bull about history along with the ignorant parents that go with this story and continue to lie to their children needs to stop.

I know that I was lied to in grade school about the Native Americans and how the pilgrims and tribes used to trade and all was good. How the native Americans “became” sick and died off, how pilgrims learned how to grow corn and other practices from them. Sure there were good times though the full truth will never be told.
